The Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Intern will gain exposure and experience in the organization, curation, and development of EHS training content. Our EHS Team is a vital group dedicated to ensuring all Pacific Seafood locations remain in compliance with federal, state, and company regulations. We consistently do our best and always strive to be better so that we can mitigate risks and create a safe working environment for all team members. As the selected intern, you will help craft the training program that will ensure a safe and healthy work environment for all team members.
Project goals and outcome:
The wastewater pollutants and best management practices (BMPs) intern will focus on identifying pollution prevention BMPs to reduce waste in seafood processing wastewater.
The intern will collaborate with Pacific Seafood team members to understand current practices, regulations, and emerging technologies related to pollution reduction measures in seafood processing to improve water quality. Additionally, the intern will assess the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of implementing various BMPs, propose recommendations for improvements, and contribute to the development of educational materials and guidance documents to promote sustainable practices for the fishing industry along the Oregon Coast.
The intern will need to identify what are the current best management practices being used in the seafood industry to minimize pollution emanating from fish scraps and residuals in wastewater and conduct a comprehensive literature review and perform any applicable data analysis to rank the effectiveness for mitigating pollution.
They will want to reduce the overall amount of pollution entering the natural environment and investigate ways to change behavior at seafood processing facilities.
OASE project details:
The intern will work with the Environmental Health & Safety Department. The Supervisor has a background in environmental science and sustainability and the team has a strong technical background in environmental compliance and sustainability. The intern will also work with both engineering and processing divisions who oversee BMP implementation and waste reduction measures at processing facilities.
Degrees/Skills identified by host :
Engineering, Environmental Science/Sustainability, Physical science, process engineering, creative and innovative thinking, analytical nature, previous projects with water treatment or water quality analysis are a plus.
