POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Program Director/Team Supervisor, Prevention Specialist implements the Substance Abuse Prevention Control (SAPC) Prevention Education Program (PEP) substance environmental prevention work plan and activities. The Prevention Specialist is also responsible for collecting the data needed for program evaluation and/or as required by SAPC.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Implement the social norm changing activities to decrease favorable Asian/Pacific Islander and Hispanic/Latino community attitudes toward underage and binge drinking and substance use, including the coordination of the activities of the “Safe & Sober Prevention Community Council” and the merchant compliance monitoring and education programs in the target Asian/Pacific Islander and Hispanic/Latino communities.

· Conduct small preventive workshop groups on alcohol awareness and education with Asian/Pacific Islander and Hispanic/Latino youth and parents in the target communities of color.

· Provide “Safe & Sober” counter advertisement, media awareness, and substance use prevention educational workshops and training to the youth and families in the target schools and communities.

· Provide at-risk/at-promise Asian/Pacific Islander and Hispanic/Latino youth in the target communities with “Problem Identification, education and Referral” services.

· Plan and implement large scale and positive alternative events, including, but not limited to, “San Gabriel Valley Youth Summit” and “Got Skills” substance-free events.

· Coordinates and assists in the implementation of the substance abuse prevention initiatives of the “San Gabriel Valley Alcohol and Other Drugs Prevention & Policy Youth Council.

· Conduct outreach and educational activities to Asian/Pacific Islander and Hispanic/Latino youth in the target communities on prescription and over-the-counter medication use/misuse and to offer safe medication disposal and storage resources.

· Maintain secure, accurate and complete record-keeping system that documents the alcohol, marijuana and prescription and over-the-counter substance use/misuse prevention activities as required by the SAPC Prevention Education Program.

· Attend and participate in all relevant Safe & Sober Prevention Community Council and other community substance abuse prevention efforts.

· Outreach to target communities and school systems in Service Planning Area 3 in Los Angeles County with information maternal dissemination

· Assist Program Evaluator and SAPC in program data collection.

· Complete all training, in-service and staff development requirements as set forth by Pacific Clinics and its’ contracting, licensing, and state requirements.

· Reports to work on time and maintains reliable and regular attendance.

· Models Pacific Clinics’ approach, mission and core values in all communication and correspondence.

· Communicates effectively using a culturally responsive approach with diverse consumer population and promotes favorable interaction with managers, co-workers and others

· Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Specifications

Education: AA Degree or higher from an accredited College or University in human services or substance abuse is required or Experience specifications described below is required without an AA Degree.

Experience:. Two years of working experience with youth, young adults and parents in school, counseling, community organizing, delivery of conflict resolution on, peer refusal and prosocial social skills development, and/or substance abuse prevention is required without an AA Degree or is preferred with an AA Degree or higher

Skills:

Effective interactive workshop and small group presentation and communication (verbal, written, listening) skills; culturally responsive community outreach and organization skills; creative problem-solving ability; Asian/Pacific Islander and Hispanic/Latino languages (especially Chinese, Vietnamese, and/or Spanish) speaking and writing ability preferred;

Physical Demands:

Ability to spend extended periods of time in standing/walking/sitting positions in outdoor and classroom environments. Ability to actively participate with clients in recreational activities.

Driving: Must possess a valid California driver's license and maintain an insurable driving record under the Clinics' liability policy.

Computer: Demonstrated ability to work in Windows environment (including, but not limited to, Word, PowerPoint and Excel).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand or sit. The employee is required to use hands to produce records and/or documentation in manual or electronic format. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally move or lift up to 10 pounds.
