Pace Women's Justice Center is Hiring a Staff Attorney- Family Law Unit ( Part- time) Near White Plains, NY

The Pace Women’s Justice Center is an independently funded legal services center within Pace University School of Law, under the 501(c) (3) nonprofit status of Pace University. Founded in 1991, it was the first academic legal center in the country devoted to training attorneys and others on domestic violence issues. The Center’s mission is to end abuse by providing innovative legal services including direct legal representation for victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and elder abuse, training, community education and outreach, service coordination, and information and referrals. Today, with a staff of 34 and over 10,000 hours contributed annually by pro-bono attorneys, volunteers, and law students, PWJC provides direct legal assistance to over 3,100 victims and survivors of domestic violence and elder abuse and conducts over 140 training and outreach events each year.

PWJC is seeking a part-time litigation staff attorney for its Family Law Unit who is committed to the Center’s mission and work. The Family Law Unit provides comprehensive, holistic, direct civil legal services to victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and/or stalking in Putnam and Westchester counties. The attorney in this position will be part of the Center’s TRUST Project, which is a grant designed to establish a coordinated community response to DV, Sexual assault and Stalking. The attorney will work collaboratively with the White Plains Department of Public Safety (WPDPS) and two other grant partners, Westchester Independent Living Center (WILC) and El Centro Hispano to serve victims and survivors of domestic violence from underserved populations including older adults, individuals with disabilities, and the Latino community. Duties will include direct representation in civil protective order and enforcement proceedings, as well as custody and support matters, advocacy and negotiation, screening of domestic incident reports, cross referrals among grant partners, safety planning, and training and community outreach. This part- time position is for 19 hours/week, requiring both in-person and remote work with flexible scheduling options.

Position Responsibilities

· Primary responsibilities include providing direct legal representation, advice and consultation in civil protective order proceeding, and custody and support matters primarily in White Plains Family Court and the Integrated Domestic Violence Court in the Westchester County Courthouse.

· Working with partnering agencies WPDPS, WILC and the Hispanic Coalition

· Screening of all Domestic Incident Reports from WPDPS

· Monthly meetings with WPDPS and partners

· Participation in community education, training and outreach programs

· Collaboration with Center staff attorneys on litigation matters and strategies

· Data collection

· Preparation of program reports

Qualifications

· Member in good standing of the New York State Bar

· 2 -3 years’ experience, including litigation, or its equivalent in Family Law practice preferred

· Experience with and/or knowledge of litigation issues associated with domestic violence cases preferred

· Bi–lingual (English/Spanish ) required

· Demonstrated commitment to public interest law

· Excellent litigation, oral advocacy and writing skills

· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills/sensitivity to survivors of abuse

· Outstanding organizational, planning and time management skills

· Proficient computer skills, specifically in Word and Excel

· Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and prioritize while working with various clients

· Outgoing and professional demeanor for interacting with a wide range of individuals from different cultures and backgrounds
