Electrical & Instrumentation Supervisor (E&I)

Primary Job Functions

  • Direct, supervise and coach hourly E&I group.
  • Electrical projects including planning, reviewing safety, generating a budget, scheduling projects, managing vendors, generating documentation and conducting training.
  • Plan and schedule daily, routine, outage and project work for the E&I group.
  • Assist with and troubleshooting electrical and instrumentation problems.
  • Work effectively with other tradespersons such as millwright and production teams.
  • Provide support for operations and maintenance.

 Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a log of electrical issues in the CMMS (currently MP-2). Hold routine review meetings with plant management to prioritize issues causing lost time and unplanned downtime.
  • Schedule and plan tasks for the E&I group to complete which reduce lost time and unplanned downtime.
  • Maintain a maintenance log of all electrical equipment in the CMMS.
  • Oversee electrical drive system maintenance, troubleshooting and repair.
  • Install, service, troubleshoot, and repair electrical equipment.
  • Install, service, troubleshoot and repair instrumentation including any item operating on compressed air.
  • Estimate the cost of electrical and instrumentation jobs and prepare budgets as needed.
  • Plan installation and startup of electrical and instrumentation equipment. 
  • Develop and manage project schedules.
  • Oversee and manage outside electrical contractors and vendors.
  • Develop supporting documentation for projects and existing equipment to include electrical schematics, layout drawings, operating and maintenance manuals, and operational procedures.
  • Develop and implement electrical training for operations and maintenance as needed.
  • Be available for emergency call-ins.

General Qualifications:

  • Must be able to read Electrical Power Diagrams—both one line and three-line diagrams.
  • Must be able to read Electrical Control Drawings
    1. Control Architecture Drawings (Network Diagram s, Drive System Overviews) 
    2. Relay Logic Electrical Elementaries
    3. PLC Electrical Elementaries 
    4. VFD Electrical Elementaries
    5. Motor Starter Electrical Elementaries
  • Must be able to comprehend Electrical Construction Documents 
    • Cable and Conduit Schedules
    • Electrical Connection Diagrams 
    • P&ID drawings
  • Must be able create Electrical Schematics representing a circuit
  • Must be able to troubleshoot and repair Electrical Power Systems 
    • Locate Power Distribution Faults
      1. Rack Breakers In & Out
      2. Replace High Amperage Fuses (> 100 amps) 
      3. Replace Circuit Breakers (>100 amps)
  • Must be able to troubleshoot Electric Motor Systems 
    • Identify Motor Interlock Problems
    • Locate Faults in Motor Starter Compartments
    • Replace Motor Contractors, Overload Relays, Control Transformers 
    • Detect and repair short circuit/ground fault conditions (Megger leads) 
    • Proficiently wire a new or replacement motor
  • Must have a basic knowledge of PLC Fundamentals
    • Ability to follow basic ladder logic
    • Understand PLC concepts of bits, integer, real , analog, discrete, inputs, and outputs
    • Ability to monitor variables within a PLC program
    • Ability to update PLC log/diary of found events and actions
  • Must have a basic knowledge of VFD fundamentals
    • Ability to change or install a VFD per electrical prints
    • Ability to determine drives status (running, stopped, faulted, enabled)
    • Ability to access basic drive parameters via keypad
    • Ability to auto tune drive via keypad
    • Ability to upload/download parameters via keypad

 Job Requirements

  1. Must personally follow and ensure that the E&I group follows all plant safety rules including specific safety rules associated with various tasks. Must use all required safety equipment.
  2. Shift work and holidays may be required.
  3. Responsible for clean-up of work area(s) at the end of each day. Notify other managers of any potentially dangerous situations and documents all corrective action taken.
