Overbrook School for the Blind is Hiring a Paraeducator Near Philadelphia, PA

Status: Full-Time, 10 Months School Calendar - Instructional
Monday thru Friday, 8AM - 3:15PM
6.5 Hours Per Day / 32.5 Hours Per Week

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

Summary of Position: Assist teacher in all activities in the classroom and stated in the Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Reports to: Classroom Teacher

Major Accountabilities:
(E) 1. Follows the IEP goals, and lesson plan throughout the day. Knows all students’ programs and activities. Follows all policies and procedures in employee handbook.

(E) 2. Follows IEP including communication systems, behavioral, feeding and therapy program. Participates in scheduled meetings and in-service training when requested or required.

(E) 3. Responsible for Morning (AM) bus duty. May also be required to pick up students in residential program before bus duty.

(4) Report to teacher for scheduled activities each day. This may include assisting with bulletin boards, copying materials, and making materials and data collection.

(E) 5. Assists in all activities involving children. This may include Art & Music; Physical Education classes swimming pool (unless excused with written medical certification). Also, personal health and hygiene of the students, lunch preparation and lunch time activities. Note: No breaks are permitted during Physical Education classes or student lunchtime.

(E) 6. In the teacher’s absence from the classroom, reinforce goals and objectives already instructed by the teacher.

(E) 7. Respects confidentiality of the students. Refrains from discussion of students or family issues with anyone except as determined appropriate by the Program Coordinator or school administration.

(E) 8. Performs other duties as assigned by teacher, coordinator or school administration. This may include being assigned to other classroom or program throughout the course of the school day.

(E) 9. Support students in the water while in the Aquatic Center as assigned.

E—indicates Essential Function of the position Specifications:

Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma Paraeducator Certification, 2 full years of college, or Associates or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Experience working with special needs children is preferred.

Skills: CPR, First Aid, certifications or the willingness to acquire it.
Valid Driver’s License is desired. It is required (for Full Time employees and desirable for Substitute Paraeducators)

PROGRAM SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

High School: Must be able to lift minimum of 50 lbs. Willingness to perform personal hygiene on students. Participate in 2 person lifts. Valid driver license required.

Working Environment: Employees are subject to accidents and/or injuries, which may be incurred during the performance of the essential functions of the position. Work is primarily indoors but some outdoor activities may be required.
