Outright International is Hiring an Intern - United Nations Near New York, NY

ABOUT OUTRIGHT ACTION INTERNATIONALFounded in 1990, Outright Action International strives to help lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) people live safer, healthier, and more empowered lives worldwide. With staff in 16 countries and global headquarters in New York City, Outright documents human rights violations, helps resource LGBTIQ movements and allies, and advocates for the rights of LGBTIQ people.

Outright is currently seeking an internationally minded intern for our United Nations Program. This person will have experience academically and/or professionally with international spaces focused on Queer Human Rights. This position will be based in New York, City and will report to the United Nations Program Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support civil society engagement with United Nations stakeholders’ open debates and proceedings in annual U.N. events at headquarters in New York.
  • Contribute to drafting communications to governments, diplomatic missions, the U.N. Secretariat, mechanisms, special funds and programs, and civil society. These communications include letters, briefers, submissions and primers.
  • Support the coordination of briefings, webinars and other events.
  • Conduct desk-based research, fact-checking and drafting for public-facing communications.
  • Collaborate with Outright's Communications team in developing content for the U.N. Advocacy Program
  • Provide logistical and administrative support, including database management, record keeping and filing.
  • Coordinate with partner civil society organizations and provide administrative support to coalition activities.
  • Monitor and report on developments across the U.N. system related to inclusions

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with the U.N. system and multilateral organizations.
  • Familiarity with human rights issues affecting LGBTIQ people in a global context.
  • Strong writing skills in English.
  • Presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Fluency in Google Suite and MS platforms, particularly Excel and Google Sheets, and other online content and team management platforms.
  • Ability to conduct research independently and organize findings into different formats, including short reports, tables and spreadsheets. 
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills; abilities to work effectively with others in a linguistically and culturally diverse environment.
  • Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable.
