JOB TITLE: OR Nurse
SUPERVISOR: O.R. Supervisor
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:
Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating perioperative patient care and ensuring patient safety.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Collects patient data in a systematic and continuous manner to identify patient needs or problems.
2. Plans nursing care by setting priorities, developing nursing strategies, collaborating, and integrating the medical plan of care.
3. Implements, evaluates, and revises the plan of care utilizing interpersonal, problem solving, and technical skills.
4. Administers medications, performs procedures and treatments in accordance with policies and procedures, operates and maintains equipment used in the care of patients.
5. Demonstrates professional responsibility in reporting to appropriate supervisory personnel any inappropriate behavior or conduct of peers, unusual occurrences or needed supplies and repairs.
6. Maintains current knowledge and skills and assists members of the nursing team to gain knowledge and skill in surgical nursing.
7. Serves as Charge Nurse as needed.
8. Assists in the evaluation and revision of procedures and techniques, policies, and/or standards and assists in the evaluation of unit supplies and equipment needed for patient care.
9. Documents patient care and maintains records consistent with policies and procedures.
10. Contributes to a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department.
11. Performs related/additional responsibilities as required or directed.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
Knowledge/Education: Skill and proficiency in applying highly technical principles, concepts, and techniques which are central to the nursing profession. Such proficiency is acquired through completion of a Diploma, Associate, or Baccalaureate degree program in nursing. Knowledge of human growth and development necessary for assessment, range of treatment, and care of patients appropriate to their ages as acquired through formal education course work.
Experience: Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures as normally acquired through 1 to 3 years experience in similar work environment.
Special Skills: Ability to operate specialized O.R. equipment and monitors. Ability to perform CPR as required through certification in Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association or its equivalent.
Equipment: Not limited to, all patient care equipment, autoclaves (prevac and gravity), stretchers, IV equipment, 02 equipment, lasers, tourniquets, lighting, electrosurgical air powered equipment, computers, microscopes, paging systems, O.R. beds.
Licensure, Registration, Certification: Current licensure or permit as a Registered Nurse in the State of South Carolina. BLS and ACLS certifications are required. PALS certification is recommended.
Interpersonal Requirements: Ability to interact with patients, physicians, anesthetists, and families for the purpose of providing information and instruction, securing cooperation, and resolving problems on a frequent basis. Interpersonal skill to obtain and interpret information appropriate to patients’ needs and ages as required for assessment, range of treatment, and patient care.
Direction of Others: Ability to assign and monitor the work of R.N.s, L.P.N.s and ancillary personnel if serving as Charge Nurse.
Essential Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of standing, walking, and bending on a continuous basis.
Performs moderate lifting, positioning, and transporting of patients on a continuous basis.
Essential Environmental Conditions: Possible exposure to anesthetics, radiation, and infectious disease entities.
Exposure to human excreta, blood, and contaminated needles on a continuous basis.
