Safety Coordinator
Purpose:The Safety Coordinator will be responsible for helping deliver effective training programs, performing job-site inspections, performing thorough accident/incident investigations, and effectively communicating the program goals to all employees. Performs responsible professional work involved in occupational, safety and health program development and implementation, safety training and accident investigation; and related duties as assigned. This position is to assist in contributing to the safe work environment through coaching and encouraging a safe workplace culture and raising awareness to eliminate incidents and injuries.

Skills / Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of safety experience or combination of education/multiple years’ experience in building construction, with a working knowledge of safety/environment principles and techniques. Construction industry field experience preferred.
  • OSHA 30-hour construction accreditation
  • First aid/CPR AED trainer a plus
  • Fork-truck trainer a plus
  • Respirator fit testing a plus
  • Computer skills with familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of scaffolding (includes swing stage), mast climbers, trenching/excavation, MEWP’s (aerial lifts)
  • Skilled in communicating clearly and effectively with individuals and groups.
  • Ability to identify safety hazards and propose alternatives for solutions.
  • The skill to develop and deliver effective safety training topics/programs.
  • Self-starting multi-tasker who can accomplish all assignments without need of close supervision.
  • Disciplined and well-organized with a strong bias towards timely, detailed performance against deadlines.
  • Strong management, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Assist the Director of Safety in planning, directing, and coordinating an overall occupational safety and health program for OBCI employees.
  • Identifies conditions which create hazards for workers, orders elimination of unsafe conditions and practices.
  • Enforces compliance with federal, state, and local occupational safety and health laws and regulations.
  • Investigation of reported accidents and occupational illnesses and assists the Director of Safety in reducing worker compensation claims.
  • Helps develop and conduct safety education and training programs for employees.
  • Investigates occupational accidents, examines causes, and recommends appropriate action to be taken.
  • Conducts regular (documented) jobsite inspections and makes recommendations as needed.
  • Investigates or assists in the investigation of potentially hazardous environmental conditions.
  • Research safety-related laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Evaluates safety and health related practices, policies and procedures and advises the director of safety on all safety-related issues.
  • Prepares and presents reports as needed.
  • Be a resource and “hands on approach” when possible/practical.
  • Ability to conduct thorough jobsite inspections, analyze information and to help develop programs to meet identified safety training needs.
  • Identify project trends and execute proactive safety initiatives to eliminate incidents.
  • Assist supervisors with daily job briefings and weekly toolbox talks (when warranted).
  • The use and application of technology as well as the evaluation and integration of new technologies as they apply to role.

Physical Demands

  • Performance of the required duties will require physical ability to climb permanent and temporary stairs, passenger use of construction personnel hoists, ability to climb ladders and negotiate work areas under construction.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to work at heights, able to climb ladders, access/inspect scaffolding, and roof areas.
  • The noise level is usually moderate to loud.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. This position may require long hours and occasional weekend work (when warranted).

Travel

The role requires travel (Greater Chicagoland, Western Indiana, Eastern Iowa, and all of central Illinois). Out of town / overnight travel not expected.
