Reference and Special Collections Librarian


We are searching for an experienced Reference and Special Collections Librarian at our Goldsmith Campus - Westchester campus. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 

Reporting to the Director of the Library, this position is responsible for coordinating reference and information literacy instruction to faculty, researchers, staff, and students; and management of the library’s special/rare collections, including artists’ books; and assisting in outreach.

Provides all forms of research and reference services for students, faculty, staff, and other library patrons, including but not limited to research consultations, in-person and email reference assistance, and general public services.
· Develops and teaches a variety of instructional programs to guide library users in identifying, accessing, and evaluating information in all formats.
· Creates, defines, and fosters an innovative information literacy program to support and enhance the College’s learning outcomes. Assesses the effectiveness of the instruction and information literacy program and works with librarians to make adjustments when necessary.
· Promotes the collections of the Library and the College, especially its artists’ books, to ensure optimal accessibility of resources and services.
· Responsible for the care and management of the Special Collections.
· Contributes to the planning and implementation of the library’s collection development policy in all formats and addresses issues such as: material selection and acquisition, collection maintenance and weeding strategy, and planning for new collections or collection areas.
· Collaborates with faculty and staff concerning future academic directions and works to change user services that may impact how the library supports the College.
· Engages and participates in ongoing assessment of library collections, policies, and services.
· Manages the Millard Sheets Library when the Director is absent.
· Participates in professional activities and maintains current knowledge of developments and trends in art and design education and academic librarianship.
Instruction, Outreach, and Reference Services:
· Promote the use of primary source materials as teaching and research tools.
· In consultation with Library staff and Faculty, incorporate these materials into the curriculum through the development of assignments and instruction programs.
· Present archives materials to classes and other groups from inside and outside of the College.
· Participate in course-related library instruction to teach information literacy skills.
· Foster interest in the history of Otis College of Art and Design through the development of dynamic and relevant exhibitions, programming, and presentations, in relation to campus and alumni events.
· Provide public assistance and respond to reference queries for researchers coming from inside and outside the College.
· May include some nights and weekends.
Performs other related duties as assigned. Must be responsive to work-related phone calls and emails during non-business hours on occasion.

Required Qualifications:

· Education: M.L.S. degree with courses in reference, archives and special collections, and user services preferred.
· Experience: 3 years progressively responsible library experience required. Required
· Strong commitment to public service. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment to develop and complete projects.
· Must be detail-oriented, have automated library systems education and experience.
· Knowledge of art and design library and information resources.
· Ability to independently plan and deliver instructional sessions.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to deal tactfully and courteously with students and faculty.
· Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing environments and priorities.
· Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity through collections, instruction, and outreach.
Preferred Qualifications

· Familiarity with art and design special collections, including artists’ books and zines.
· Experience planning and coordinating programs, workshops, pop-up libraries, and displays.
· Experience embedding information literacy into curriculum.
· Knowledge of teaching and learning practices.
· Ability to develop innovative outreach programs and services.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Compensation Type: Annual Salary
