Position Summary & Objectives

The Physical Therapist – Occupational Health is primarily responsible for developing individualized treatment plans to optimize movement and promote activity-participation that influences sustained worker productivity. Implements with minimal supervision, high quality physical therapy services for Occupational Health patients, caregivers and facilitates in accordance with the principles and practices of physical therapy and OrthoAlaska policies and procedures. Develops treatment plans, supervises assistants and aides, contributes to case management, and provides quality patient care. Maintains positive level of interaction with facilities and clients. Enhances and expands client relations with OrthoAlaska facilities and staff.

Essential Functions

  1. Evaluate, treat, and direct treatment for patients for whom physical therapy is medically necessary. Document this need clearly.

  2. Conduct work-related physical therapy evaluations and writeups to document Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs).

  3. Manage and formulate work conditioning programs related to specific physical functions as defined by the client and/or job description.

  4. Administer standardized assessments for pre-employment screening.

  5. Conduct initial physical therapy evaluations in accordance with workers compensation standards.

  6. Maintain ongoing treatment documentation in which goals, progress toward functional goals, and medical necessity are clearly stated.

  7. Complete all required documentation (pre-certification, physician reports, daily notes, and charges) legibly, appropriately, and in a timely fashion in order to meet facility, physician and payer deadlines.

  8. Maintain open and respectful communication with co-workers, physicians, patients, authorized family members, and third-party payers at all times.

  9. Attend and/or participate in department meetings as directed by Director of Therapy services.

  10. Supervise staff, aides and students (as needed).

  11. Keep therapy area clean, neat, and presentable in appearance.

  12. Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Therapy Services, PCA Medical Director, and PCA Practice Administrator.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Alaska State Laws related to physical therapy and occupational health.

Skills

  • Leadership skills sufficient to effectively direct and supervise activities of staff and aides in delivering quality care to patients; including coaching and teaching skills.

  • Strong organizational skills, time management and planning skills.

  • Effective clinical problem-solving skills.

  • Strong communication skills for accurate, concise, and organized oral and written presentations of information to patients and staff.

  • Computer skills for effective management of patient records, management reports and billing.

Abilities

  • Ability to work within a team.

  • Ability to identify and prioritize issues in responsive manner, develop and execute sound, innovative action plans and ensure appropriate results.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift patients using appropriate biomechanical lifting techniques frequently throughout the course of the work day/shift; must be capable of frequently lifting fifty (50) pounds dead weight alone.

  • Ability to walk, bend, stand and reach consistently during the work day/shift.

  • Visual acuity (near and distant) sufficient to evaluate, diagnose and monitor patient needs and to maintain accurate records, recognize people, and provide directions.

  • Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to understand and give directions.

  • Ability to push wheeled equipment through the facility and to the community.

  • Possess fine motor skills for legible and accurate writing of reports, charting, scheduling daily correspondence and presentations, either manually or through use of dictation equipment.

  • Possesses fine motor skills for the effective and efficient handling of diagnostic or therapeutic equipment.

Equipment Operated

Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc. In addition, various therapy equipment may be used as necessary per individual treatment plans.

Work Environment

Position is in a well-lighted, well-ventilated environment. Exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to a clinical setting is possible.

Education / Experience / Licenses / Certifications

Required

  • Graduate of an American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) accredited school of Physical Therapy.

  • Licensed in the state of Alaska and in good standing to practice Physical Therapy.

Position Type & Expected Work Hours

This is a full-time position. Work hours are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or other approved hours between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Occasional extended work hours may be required as business needs demand. Some employees in this position may be scheduled to work weekend shifts.
