Director, Financial Reporting & Technical Accounting

Orna Therapeutics is a Cambridge-based biotechnology startup on a mission to create therapies for diseases inaccessible to existing approaches. Built on novel circular RNA technology developed at MIT, Orna is leading the next wave of RNA therapeutics with our best-in-class expression and delivery platform. We are seeking a Director of Financial Reporting & Technical Accounting to head our financial reporting function and play a key role in the Finance organization. Reporting to the CFO, the Director of Financial Reporting will drive applicable financial reports to completion. They will lead a team for technical accounting and internal controls.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to understand and apply various accounting principles and possess a deep knowledge of the Corporate, Clinical Development and R&D operations in the biopharmaceutical industry to solve a wide range of challenges, raise business issues, and identify and implement process improvement opportunities. A strong candidate will have a demonstrated ability to communicate to peers, clients and top management in a clear and concise manner. The candidate will display the willingness and ability to operate independently supporting many business needs at all levels required to achieve our corporate goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Owning the preparation and issuance of the financial statements, including the quarterly unaudited financial statements and the annual audited financial statements.
  • Ensuring that the financial statements are accurate and complete by reviewing them for any errors or omissions.
  • Reporting to management on the company’s financial health and suggesting ways to improve performance.
  • Reviewing the company’s accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with industry standards.
  • Estimating the impact of new accounting standards or other changes in accounting principles on the company’s financial statements.
  • Coordinating with external auditors, internal accounting staff, and other departments involved in financial reporting processes.
  • Making decisions about which accounting methods should be used for recording transactions, and communicating these decisions to other departments within the organization.
  • Preparing a roadmap to transition from financial statement prepared using AICPA standards to PCAOB standards.

Qualifications
  • Certified Public Accountant (or equivalent experience) with a minimum five years of financial reporting experience.
  • Biotechnology/pharmaceutical industries experience required.
  • Highly skilled in Excel; familiar with NetSuite, Bill.com and Redline.
  • Highly proficient in understanding complex business models.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and apply accounting standards, especially with respect to revenue.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple functional areas in a collaborative, team environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively influence business partners and decisions on optimal decisions for the company.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently with minimal supervision and/or guidance.
  • Well organized and a strong attention detail; ability to effectively adopt/implement systematic approaches in order to maximize efficiencies and scalability.
  • Positive work ethic, superb communication, and organizational skills, and unquestionable integrity and personal ethics.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment with the ability to think strategically.
  • Successful experience in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment.
