Orleans Parish School Board is Hiring a School Counselor Near Orleans, LA
The School Counselor supports the academic, social, emotional, and personal development of students. This individual will engage with the student and families to identify challenges that are impeding the student’s learning experience and provides the necessary internal and external resources and support to ensure the student’s success.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Works to maximize student success, promote access, and equity for all students;
- Assesses the needs, strengths, and weaknesses of students through a variety of means including one-on-one assessments, conversations, or interviews; standardized or aptitude testing; small group activities; and observations throughout the school day;
- Assists students with academic planning, accountability, and/or organization;
- Teaches a variety of skills including social skills, study skills, and test-taking skills;
- Counsels students with personal, social, disciplinary, and behavioral issues;
- Helps students develop coping strategies and problem-solving skills;
- Collaborates with teachers to identify ways to improve the achievement and social development of students;
- Collaborate with community organizations and agencies to provide additional support for students;
- Connect families with external resources and long-term support as needed;
- Promptly notifies appropriate authorities of any reports or suspicions of crimes, abuse, or neglect;
- Analyzes student data to identify student's needs, challenges, and issues;
- Collaborates with other educators, parents, and students to develop, review, renew, and/or modify Individualized Education Plans (IEP) or 504 plans for students who qualify;
- Responds to and provides support during crises, such as student emergencies or critical incidents. Coordinates activities related to the administration of educational testing in accordance with Board policy;
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence;
- Serves on professional staff committees as required; and
- Performs other duties as required.
- Master’s Degree in Counseling/Guidance, Education, or Social Work required.
- Minimum of five years of related experience strongly preferred.
- Meets Louisiana state certification requirements.
