Orlando Science Schools (K-12) is Hiring a Middle School Chemistry Teacher (2024-2025 School Year) Near Orlando, FL

Job Summary

The Science teacher at Orlando Science Charter School is responsible for classroom instruction, providing support, and education to students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans for students, delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding the instructional program and student progress.

To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each job duty, and responsibility, and meet the qualifications posted below.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Valid or eligible for Chemistry teaching Certification in the State of Florida
  • Science related Degree
  • English Language fluency
  • Possess practical oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage the classroom and supervise students
  • Communicate effectively with individuals of varied cultural and educational backgrounds

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Content knowledge in Chemistry, Physical and General Science.

Essential Job duties and responsibilities

  • Provide academic instruction, ensuring lesson plans are in line with the curriculum schedule
  • Plan for classroom activities, including the daily lesson plans preparation
  • Identifying the materials to implement in classroom activities and preparing class projects
  • Confer with other teachers for peer collaboration
  • Regularly communicate basis about the schedule, assignments, events, and individual student needs
  • Meet with parents during scheduled student/teacher conferences
  • Maintain grades and curriculum online
  • Attend monthly faculty meetings
  • Work with administrators and instructional teams to plan and implement hands-on programs and activities for students and the school

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach, utilizing a course of study adopted by Orlando Science Schools and other appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in the State of Florida
  • Develop lesson plans to demonstrate Science concepts using models, other available technology methods, and other standard or teacher-prepared instructional aids
  • Provide opportunities, when needed, for individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student
  • Support a growth mindset in the classroom, including how to learn from mistakes, persevere, manage impulsivity, and develop grit
  • Use assessment data to find a student’s readiness level so they can be met where they are and moved forward in their learning using feedback effectively
  • Participate in professional development in curriculum, instruction, and assessment
  • Design learning activities that will relate Science to the physical world
  • Establish and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment
  • Evaluate each student's progress in science knowledge and skills
  • Supervise daily and check homework, ensure students’ academic progress and serve as a primary point of contact for parents
  • Regularly assess student mastery of critical skills and concepts and use this data to differentiate instruction to meet student needs
  • Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities
  • Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator(s) to develop the method by which they will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines
  • Achieve course and school-wide student performance goals
  • Grade papers and perform other administrative duties as needed
  • Administer, gather, assess, and grade assessments, classwork, assignments, and essays or assign this work to others
  • Keep mandatory records, such as attendance records, grades, and progress reports
  • Appraise each student’s progress in meeting the course standards
  • Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities
  • Create and sustain standards of student behavior needed to support a disciplined, productive, and safe classroom environment
  • Demonstrate compassion to students, parents, and foster student self-esteem
  • Communicate with parents to ensure parents’ involvement in their child's development
  • Administer testing by division testing practices
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Oversee study halls, after-school activities, and field trips, and sponsor student clubs
  • Participate in extracurricular activities
  • Join staff meetings
  • Attend mandatory school training

To help each student develop competence in science skills and an understanding of the structure of science; to motivate each student to apply mathematical knowledge and skills in the solution of practical problems; to encourage the students to develop their unique talents in the field of Science.

Employees of OSS are privileged to receive both private and county professional development. Professional development is offered at an individual level (teacher) and group level (staff). Many of our teachers from our Orlando Science Campus have attended national conferences focusing on reading, science, math, and specific teaching methodologies. Our schools have worked closely with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Valencia Community College, McKeel Academy of Technology, The Ron Clark Academy, and motivational speaker Harry Wong. Multiple professional days are scheduled in advance each school year.
