Position Summary

The Waste Prevention and Environmental Services Department (WPES) is looking for a Scalehouse Supervisor to supervise the scalehouse operations team at Metro South Transfer Station. You will lead, develop, and grow a robust team of technicians dedicated to extraordinary customer service, cash management, and education of customers. This team operates in a fast-paced environment that weigh inbound and outbound customers at the transfer station. Transactions are paid through automated accounts, cash, credit card, and check all managed through a proprietary Point of Sale system.

As the
Scalehouse Supervisor you will:
  • Hire, train, and supervise staff. Staffing may include multiple levels of supervision, direct and indirect reports, and regular full- and part-time, and/or temporary/seasonal staff.
  • Supervise and coordinate staff activities by planning, organizing, and coordinating workloads and assignments, including coaching, and evaluating staff performance.
  • Monitor service levels, labor costs, products, and prices, to stay within budget.
  • Maintain accounts and contracts, by developing and maintaining relationships.
  • Provide staff support, including input to the planning process for short- and long-term goal setting.
  • Be responsible for carrying out agency and departmental plans.
  • Develop and maintain procedures, standards, and processes. Provide and ensure excellent customer service and a supportive and respectful environment. Assist the public, public officials and agency partners, and other employees in a professional and courteous manner with the goal of meeting or exceeding expectations.
  • Resolve and report requests and concerns.
  • Complete paperwork and reports in a timely and accurate manner and maintain computerized and hard copy records and files.
  • Be responsible for emergency management; may respond to and handle emergency situations.
  • Actively participate on committees and/or attend meetings as assigned.
  • Fulfill Metro’s core values of public service, excellence, teamwork, respect, innovation and sustainability.
  • Comply with Metro and Metro’s visitor venues policies, procedures and applicable work rules; applicable law and collective bargaining agreements as appropriate.

  • Ability to work with mechanical and/or specialized equipment such as hand tools, riveters and drills.
  • Ability to work in a safe manner and follow safety policies, practices, and procedures.

TO QUALIFY

Minimum qualifications
  • Some specialized training and knowledge beyond the high school level in the function or responsibility that is to be supervised AND
  • Three years of directly related experience AND
  • Two years of supervisory experience OR
  • Any combination of education, professional, volunteer and lived experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities.
Working Conditions
  • Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors with employees being exposed to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required use of Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Employees work with power equipment, sharp tools, and around potentially strong odors, slippery surfaces and loud noises.
  • The position requires standing and sitting on a daily basis.

Like to have qualifications
You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider them when identifying the most qualified candidates. Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience, including the military, or life experience that are relevant for this position.
  • Previous experience working in a union environment and leading a represented team.
  • Previous experience working with PeopleSoft, Kronos, Point of Sale systems, specifically scale operating systems.
  • Solid Waste industry experience, particularly in scalehouse operations.

COMPENSATION, BENEFITS AND REPRESENTATON
The full-salary range for this position is Step 1. $82,020.00 to Step 7. $109,914.00.However, unless a candidate’s qualifications justify, based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements and Metro’s internal equity review process, the appointment will likely be made between Step 1. $82,020.00 to the equity range Step 4 $99,948.00.
