Oregon Health & Science University is Hiring a Staff Scientist Near Portland, OR

Department Overview

The Tafesse lab within the department of Molecular Microbiology & Immunology is seeking a Staff Scientist. This position entails conducting studies on single-domain antibodies, AAV vectors, and gene therapy as a highly experienced scientist. The research will center on the development of AAV vector construction and the harnessing of nanobody-mediated gene therapy and drug delivery systems. The role requires upholding high standards, ensuring safety, and maintaining the integrity of research activities.

Furthermore, this staff scientist will be tasked with training and supervising junior researchers, including Research Assistants, undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and rotating students.

The staff scientist will assist in drafting papers and grant applications, preparing figures, and writing papers and proposals. Additionally, the individual will have the opportunity to serve as a co-investigator on grant proposals.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Conduct research to achieve the objectives of the nanobody/AAV projects. Responsibilities encompass designing experiments, creating AAV vectors, producing essential reagents, developing and executing assays for sample analysis, conducting tissue culture studies, and collecting and interpreting data. Address any issues that arise and maintain detailed and accurate records of all work. Additionally, stay updated by reviewing relevant literature and gathering resources to ensure proficiency in leading and managing the projects.
  • Write, publish and collaborate with peers on scientific papers in high quality, peer-reviewed journals; present findings at national or international conferences; participate in other independent professional activities, as appropriate, 
  • Provide research guidance and technical expertise to postdoctoral members of the research team, student researchers and technical staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in relevant field
  • 5 years of relevant post-doctoral work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience in AAV field

Additional Details

  • Work is generally 40 hours per week during normal working hours, however, some evening and weekend work may be necessary on occasion.
  • Personnel will need to work sitting at lab bench. Some standing required—for up to 4 hours at a time. Personal protective equipment must be worn as required. (Gloves, mask/respirator, eyewear, lab coat, etc).
