Dialysis nurses provide care to all ages and a diversified population ranging from acute to chronically ill patients while adhering to strict, dynamic regulatory standards. During the hemodialysis (HD) procedure, the nurse is managing the patient and clinical status, the venous access, the infusion of blood components or specialized fluids, and oversees the technical aspects of the HD machines. Additional responsibilities include providing patient/family/public education, overseeing dialysis technicians in the performance of dialysis from start to finish, performing surveillance and testing of dialysis water treatment equipment and dialysis water (such as chlorine, hardness, conductivity, water cultures), and participating in quality improvement activities to include collection of data for the dialysis unit Quality Assurance Improvement T. The Dialysis Department regular service hours are from 0700—1900 Monday thru Saturday with mandatory on-call service Monday thru Saturday 1900—0700 and all day on Sunday and holidays. Scheduling is flexible with call being shared among regular staff. Dialysis RN's will provide services to pediatric and adult patient population serving both hospitals.
