Casey Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology at OHSU is recruiting a full-time Physician Assistant to work with our current group of faculty and fellows.

This position will join an established and highly regarded University-based practice with clinical and educational responsibilities and will hold an academic appointment. The group practice consists of 12 optometrists and 52 ophthalmologists offering sub-specialty services in cornea, vitreoretinal disease, ophthalmic pathology and oncology, uveitis and ocular immunology, glaucoma, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, low vision rehabilitation, and ophthalmic genetics.

Portland is an increasingly popular destination with its vibrant city life and rich culture, a variety of neighborhoods, and great restaurants. It is in the heart of the Pacific Northwest- an outdoor playground with four seasons, mild winters, and ready access to summer beaches and winter skiing.

Function/Duties of Position

The duties of this position include:

  • Provide medical care independently in inpatient and outpatient setting to ophthalmology patients.
  • Communicate with attending physicians regarding a patient's condition, treatment plans, and urgent medical needs
  • Communicate with patients and family regarding their medical conditions, treatment plans, and their progress. Review labs and imaging as appropriate
  • Assure appropriate setting of care (ambulatory, inpatient, critical care, acute care)
  • Document subjective and objective findings, assessment and plan clearly and accurately in progress notes according to OHSU guidelines
  • Maintain communication with primary care providers and other individuals and agencies as appropriate
  • Provide preoperative H&P evaluations; coordination of ancillary services; promoting and maintaining health through the use of ancillary services, educational materials and counseling of patients and families;
  • Provide same day response to medical advice/prescription phone requests and coordinating patient services with Ophthalmology outpatient staff promoting a safe environment for patients and adhering to policies regarding patient care and confidentiality to support the mission and goals of OHSU
  • Assist in training newly hired Physician Assistants.
  • Attend and participate in Grand Rounds, OHSU conferences, lectures, national conferences, and other learning opportunities as available

After appropriate proctoring, APPs will independently perform procedures to include:

Administer topical and oral medications

Biometry

Contact lens fitting

Evaluate and manage corneal abrasions

Functional ocular measurements and tests

Lensometry

Measurement of intra-ocular pressure

Ocular motility testing

Refractometry

Removal of uncomplicated extraocular foreign body (cornea, conjunctiva, eyelid)

Routine eye examinations

Slit lamp exam and stain for abrasion

Tonometry

Visual field testing

Required Qualifications

Successful completion of Physician Assistant program and certification from an accredited program. Current ACLS certification through the American Heart Association. Previous experience as an advanced practice provider is preferred. Interest in learning advanced clinical skills required to practice in the Ophthalmology environment. Requires a current and active Physician Assistant License for the State of Oregon and current DEA certification.

Experience in Ophthalmology is preferred.
