Performs preventive or corrective maintenance tasks pertaining to Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) facility Campus-Wide operations including but not limited to changing HVAC filters, fan belts, checking motor timing and testing control systems. Fabricates parts and possess knowledge of plumbing, mechanical, HVAC systems and components. Coordinates the work of other DCM facility technicians and outside vendors, interfaces with animal research staff and assists the Operations Manager with DCM facility issues and building support systems operation. Must have a broad knowledge of practices and methods of various trades such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and mechanical. Requires intermediate knowledge of the use of hand and shop tools. Must acquire a working knowledge of building automation systems (BAS) software related to DCM facility operations and the ability to evaluate and respond to BAS environmental alarms and emergency situations. This position requires rotating 24/7 on-call duty to monitor BAS alarms pertaining to DCM operations that may require prompt in-person response and resolution at any time of day while on-call.
The Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) provides care and housing of animals throughout the OHSU Central and Waterfront campus including but not limited to fish, amphibians, birds and a wide range of rodent and non-rodent mammalian species. The Senior Facilities Technician is expected to acquire an understanding of the regulations, guidelines and departmental standard operating procedures pertaining to the care and use of laboratory animals. The Senior Facilities Technician position requires interaction with all animal species under DCM care.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Work independently by making decisions related to the directed task. Skill in keeping accurate records. Ability to read and interpret shop drawings and sketches, blue prints, OEM’s, and schematics. Knowledge of methods, materials and tools of various levels of building, electrical, plumbing, steam and mechanical trades.
Knowledge and understanding of procedures and SOP’s pertaining to the care, transportation and use of laboratory animals.
Ability to operate specialized equipment such as cage washers, tunnel washers and autoclaves.
