Description

POSITION SUMMARY

This position provides services to students in the areas of academics, college and career planning, social and emotional well-being, support and crisis counseling, and other developmental concerns. Encourages family involvement and responsibility in assisting students to develop their maximum potential and spiritual growth

Reports to: Director of Counseling & Academic Support

Supervises: None

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Managea caseload of 10th-12th grade students or a caseload of 9th-grade students
  • Counselstudents regarding educational issues such as course and program selection, class scheduling, college planning, school adjustment, attendance, and study habits
  • Provideinformation and data to students on college, career, and vocational planning
  • Providesocial and emotional adjustment counseling and crisis intervention
  • Collect, organize, and analyzestudent information through the use of educational data, test results, and interview techniques
  • Appraisestudent interest, aptitudes, and attitudes using a variety of assessment techniques
  • Maintainaccurate and complete student records as required by law or school policies
  • Communicate with parents, guardians, school personnel, and youth or social service providers regarding student progress, concerns, and resource needs
  • Identifiypotential domestic or substance abuse, harassment, bullying, or other problems affecting student development
  • 10th-12th grade counselor meets one-on-one with all 11th and 12th-grade students for college planning meetings; 9th-grade counselors meet individually with all students for academic planning meetings

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Attenddepartment and faculty meetings and required school functions
  • Attendrequired Counseling Department seminars and workshops
  • May assist in planning and development of master schedules, calendars, programs that enhance student educational, career, and vocational opportunities, and individual education plans for students with special needs
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Counseling & Academic Support

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

MA or MS Degree required or in progress under the supervision of a credentialed school counselor; Major in Education, Counseling, or related field

Experience

Previous experience as a School Counselor or working in an educational setting is preferred

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND CLEARANCES

  • Pupil Personnel Services Credential preferred
  • Cleared Background/Fingerprint check
  • Valid CPR certifications and First Aid Certifications
  • Cleared TB Risk assessment
  • Completion of Ministry Safe Training

Knowledge

  • Knowledgeable about the ministry and purpose of Lutheran education
  • Knowledge of the latest academic and personal/social support services and programming as well as the latest research in various content areas including, but not limited to college planning, career development, and emotional/social development
  • Working knowledge of counseling and college planning best practices, counseling professional growth continuum, and processes for reflective practice

  • Proven listening and interpersonal skills
  • A life-long learner who models intellectual curiosity, self-reflection, and stewardship of talents
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills
  • Technologically literate: Comfortable writing and presenting material using a PC or MAC (including tablets) and several software packages including PowerPoint, Excel, and Google Suite

  • Exhibits the highest level of Christian integrity - his/her life reflects Christ-like morals, behavior, attitude, and leadership
  • Ability to articulate their Christian faith
  • Active member of a Christian church; Missouri Synod preferred
  • Supports the Mission and Statement of Faith at Orange Lutheran High School

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position primarily involves sedentary work
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit;
  • Use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, squat, kneel, jump, twist, or bend
  • Specific vision abilities include near and far vision within the normal range, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus; prolonged viewing of a computer screen

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The typical work environment is in a climate-controlled office
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate
