Hastings Mutual is seeking a Flex Property Claim Representative to join its Property Claim team! This is a great opportunity to join our Inside Property Claim Team and provide excellent assistance to our policyholders.

Position Overview

The Flex Property Claim Representative investigates, evaluates, and resolves minor to moderate claims within the Company’s contractual and legal obligations while providing quality service and ensuring appropriate payments to our customers. This role will handle a blend of field (in-person) and inside (remote) claim types. The ratio of field to inside claim types is based on the business need. Given the flexible nature of the role, this position will be called upon to deploy to locations within the assigned operating territory to assist with catastrophe and non-catastrophe field claims. 

Position Location & Work Format

A remote-based role, with the individual working from home and traveling to locations as needed to investigate and evaluate assigned claims. This position will provide service to our policyholders located throughout the Greater Fort Wayne, Indiana area. Candidates must currently reside or be able to relocate to this territory for consideration.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages a personal caseload of claims, including litigation, to ensure the proper adjudication or settlement of those claims.
  • Complies with all state and federal regulations, Core Values, and established processes and guidelines.
  • Facilitates the claim process and resolves claims promptly by initiating and maintaining positive and productive communications with all customers.
  • Investigates, reviews/applies coverage/compensability, evaluate, and settle claims within the scope of the Company’s contractual and legal obligations to ensure that settlements are fair and equitable to the insured, claimant, and the company. Minimal independent, outside coverage analysis only as approved by the Manager or Director.
  • Ensures salvage and subrogation opportunities are identified and pursued to minimize claim losses.
  • Utilizes all appropriate loss and expense savings programs and directs the activities of outside vendors to ensure only necessary and cost-effective work is accomplished.
  • Accurately and thoroughly document all claim files in the Claim system of record to substantiate the claim's disposition and minimize the possibility of erroneous payments.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate case reserves sufficient to fund the payment of the claim once it is resolved, whether through settlement, litigation, or arbitration.
  • Identifies potential fraud and refers to the Special Investigations Unit.
  • Interacts with surveillance companies, independent adjusters, and special investigators.
  • Coordinates relevant claim information with Loss Control, Underwriting, Marketing, etc., to maximize the company’s effectiveness.
  • May serve as a technical resource for other staff members and may assist in departmental training.
  • Actively participates in professional development, i.e., continuing education or self-improvement.
    • Secures and/or maintains appropriate state adjuster license(s) and continuing education credits, as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.

Candidate Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience is required in lieu of a degree.
  • Completion of industry-related designation or actively working towards a designation is preferred.
  • Computer experience and proficiency (MS Office, Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication ability.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently as well as in a team.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills and the ability to be decisive.
  • Ability to negotiate skillfully in demanding situations and manage conflict while maintaining relationships.
  • Adapts easily to new or changing assignments, priorities, requirements, or situations.
  • Demonstrated time management and organizational skills to prioritize and complete work and/or projects effectively.
