Fleet Services Maintenance – (Seasonal)

Status: Part-time/Temporary/Seasonal (PTS) position, non-exempt

Salary: $15.50 to $19.00 per hour (depending upon qualifications) opportunity for end of the season bonus! $0.50 for every hour worked

Location: Maintenance Facility Building

Hours:Typically 7:00am-3:30pm shift; occasional overtime may be required

Reporting Relationship: Reports to Fleet Services Manager

Public Works Department

The Public Works Department is comprised of Engineering, the Water Treatment Plant, Utility Field Operations, Street Maintenance, Fleet Services, and Environmental Services. The department is responsible for the environmental management, design, construction, and maintenance of the street, water, sewer, and drainage infrastructure systems in the community. The Fleet Services division provides purchasing, maintenance and repair support for all City vehicles and equipment.

Position Responsibilities

The Fleet Services Seasonal Maintenance position uses hand tools and power equipment to perform a wide variety of maintenance and support activities for the Fleet Services department. This position operates various vehicles and equipment as part of the service and repair function of the department. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are: 

  • Uses strong mechanical aptitude to perform a variety of fleet maintenance activities (i.e. using hand and power tools, operating vehicles, operating riding lawn mowers and light duty equipment).
  • Under guidance from other Fleet Mechanics, performs preventive maintenance and light duty repairs to City vehicles and equipment
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of all maintenance activities, identifies parts and supplies required using computerized systems provided.
  • Uses City vehicles to run parts and provide pickup and delivery services.
  • Assists with shop cleanup activities and routine safety inspections.
  • Demonstrates safe equipment operation and work habits in the Fleet shop and on the road.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and an excellent driving record.

Position Requirements

Education High School Diploma, or equivalent (G.E.D) required.

Work Experience: Must be 18 years or older. Experience in an automotive or truck related field preferred. Must have a valid Minnesota driver’s license.

Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to lift/carry/pull at least 50lbs. frequently, 50-75lbs. occasionally. Occasionally needs to work outside in cold, hot, wet and/or windy conditions.

Position Specific Expectations

Safety: All Maintenance Technicians must demonstrate safe equipment operation and working conditions on City streets, in parks and while working in the shop.

Accountability: Follows through on commitments; focuses on appropriate tasks throughout the shift; takes responsibilities for actions both as an individual and on behalf of the organization; actions and words are in sync; follows all policies and procedures; maintains confidentiality; is prepared and punctual to all scheduled shifts.

Communication: Able to convey a message to get a point across; communicates in a clear and concise manner; able to write clearly and succinctly; tailors message to a variety of communication settings and styles.

Attention to Detail: Able to find errors in work and solve problems; anticipates issues and performs at a high level of accuracy; sets up systems to ensure errors are not repeated.
