Clinical Supervisor

Position Summary:

Under the general direction of Ophthalmology LTD’s Clinical Nurse Manager, the Clinical Supervisor will provide clinical support and supervision to Ophthalmology LTD clinical employees, and coordinates day-to-day functions and responsibilities to ensure high-quality patient care is achieved.

Essential Skills and Expectations:

  • Promote and implement the philosophy and objectives of Ophthalmology LTD by maintaining standards of high-quality patient care.
  • Comply with Ophthalmology Ltd policy on confidentiality of patient information, data, and records
  • Maintain professional competence through credentialing and participation in in-services, educational programs, and professional meetings when applicable.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the principles of optics and ocular function.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of eye anatomy, disease, symptoms, and ocular medications
  • Ability to communicate clearly and calmly.
  • Ability to elicit the information needed to make a brief evaluation.
  • Ability to work closely with physicians and other clinicians.
  • Must exhibit professionalism, courtesy, and willingness to help at all times.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledgeable in regard to the referral process and participation status of various physicians and health insurance plans.
  • Personable and empathetic with regard to employee and patient needs and concerns.
  • Efficient and well-organized with precise attention to detail and the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Function effectively while under pressure.
  • Demonstrate computer and EMR literacy (Thorough understanding of documentation requirements in EMR following patient contact (telephone calls or in-person discussion).


Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with the Clinical Nurse Manager to implement goals and objectives for clinical personnel.
  • Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly staff schedules for all clinical staff based on patient requirements and staff qualifications; grant PTO and assist in completing timecards for clinical staff.
  • Act as a resource for technicians and staff with regard to patient care and triage within the scope of practice.
  • Assist with phone calls and email inquiries from physicians and patients, and other personnel.
  • Primary point of contact for drug reps, appointments, samples, and arranging educational lunches.
  • Primary point of contact for residents and medical students.
  • Responsible for coordinating annual influenza vaccination for Ophthalmology LTD and its subsidiaries.
  • Responsible for annual compliance training program. Acts as OSHA primary resource.
  • Assess walk-in patients for urgent/emergent concerns as needed. Assist in scheduling appointments appropriately based on patients’ ophthalmic needs.
  • Assist with nursing home patients who arrive without an attendant or family member as needed.
  • Respond to emergencies or urgent patient care within the clinic, arrange for transport if needed and document on incident report.
  • Assist patients with getting in and out of vehicles and/or using the restroom if needed.
  • Assist in scheduling ancillary tests such as MRI and CT scans.
  • Communicate physician orders to appropriate facilities
  • Assist with in clinic procedures (Fluorescein Angiograms, plastics procedures, etc. as defined by scope of practice.).
  • Act as “air traffic controller”, directing patients where to go while in the clinic.
  • Responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required.
  • 3-5 years of experience in the ophthalmic health care setting is strongly desired.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or higher certification strongly desired or RN license.
  • Two years of supervisory skills experience – or on-the-job training strongly desired.
  • Demonstrates strong management competency; including but not limited to leadership, collaboration, negotiation, motivational skills, and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrates effectiveness in program planning, design, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, compute rates and percentages, and interpret graphs.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of job duties and responsibilities for all clinical team members.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to write legibly and type accurately.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively via phone.
  • Must have manual dexterity for the use of computers and phones.
  • Must have normal visual and auditory acuity.

Reports to:

  • Clinical Nurse Manager.

Additional:

  • Normal work week is Monday – Friday. Hours may vary depending on workload.
