Elementary Music Teacher Specialist - The Open Classroom

SUMMARY: This position plans and provides music instruction to elementary students based on state, district, and school curricula and requirements, and based on the students’ social and other formative needs. This position will implement the Bevery Taylor Sorenson grant requirements. 
 
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 

1. Plan and Prepare Instruction

Work Environment Requirements:

1. Risks found in the typical work environment which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations.
2. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work: however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, etc…

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Valid State of Utah Teacher License with a music endorsement, or an Associated Educator license or a license from another state that is transferrable to Utah.
2. Training/certification or working knowledge of Orff-Schulwerk, Kodaly, or other leading philosophies of active music education for students in grades K-8.
3. Professional communication skills including, but not limited to: excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; confident, articulate, and professional speaking abilities; and empathic listening and persuasive speaking skills.
4. Maintain accurate records in a wide variety of manual and electronic documents, files, and records to provide up-to-date information and historical reference in accordance with established administrative guidelines and legal requirements
5. Occasionally be required to: roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 30 pounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ability to maintain and perform minor repairs on various instruments
2. Ability to provide beginning/intermediate vocal and instrumental music instruction for students in grades 4-6 using approved curriculum
3. Ability to provide basic general music instruction to grades K-6 using approved curriculum
4. Ability to track and maintain instrument inventory
5. Ability to plan and provide culturally relevant music lessons using a variety of musical styles
6. Ability to tailor lessons to meet the cultural and social needs of diverse student populations
7. Spanish Speaker: speaks, reads, writes and understands spoken Spanish
8. Have an ESL endorsement or will obtain one within 4 years of hire
9. Previous teaching experience
10. Knowledge of effective English Language Learners teaching practices; student social-emotional learning, accelerated/extended learning programs and special needs students, including laws and regulations of special education and 504 plans.
