Position Description
The Nutrition Assistant conducts resident screens, gathering data and performing other tasks to assist the Registered Dietician in providing medical nutrition therapy. The Nutrition Assistant assists Registered Dietician with the implementation of programs and presentation of informative, engaging, and interactive classes and dining experiences for the Cadia Community. They help to educate residents about the connection between food, fitness, and health. They help to develop menus and oversee foodservice sanitation and food safety. Also, they may help manage foodservice employees, purchase, prepare food, and maintain budgets within foodservice operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Meet with residents to assist the Registered Dietician to provide medical nutrition therapy for malnutrition, pressure injuries/ulcers, unintentional weight loss, specialized nutrition care for chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, chronic kidney disease, heart failure, dysphagia, and neurological disorders), and/or post-surgical care & other nutritional related conditions.
Coordinate with interdisciplinary staff including, but not limited to, speech therapists, physicians, nursing, and social workers, & responsible parties to provide maximum level of care with least restrictive nutrition interventions at regular intervals.
Assist the Registered Dietician to complete comprehensive documentation for resident within 72 hours (about 3 days) of admission and for quarterly & annual assessment to include review of diagnoses, orders, weights, wounds, lab results, intake, including enteral as appropriate & calculate needs.
Assist the Registered Dietician to complete monthly, and as needed, documentation as it pertains to weights, wounds & enteral feedings.
Develop and continuously update Care Plan to address resident needs, goals & interventions.
Provide documentation, which identifies as specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, comprehensive, accurate & timely.
Respect resident rights and integrity regarding HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) and refusal of care as appropriate.
Coordinate with Social Services to provide safe discharge instructions.
Comply with and complete all Federal CMS regulations & reporting as appropriate.
Performs duties within the scope of practice as defined by State, Federal & accrediting organization regulations.
Monitor use of enteral nutrition pumps, water flush bag, spike sets during resident rounds to ensure proper protocol is followed.
Attend, contribute & document accordingly meetings regularly to include, but not limited to, Clinical Rounds, IDT Care Conferences, Wound Rounds, At Risk, Quality Assurance & Monthly Staff Meetings.
Serve on, participate in, and attend various committees of the facility (i.e., Quality Assurance, Safety, High Risk, Resident Council, Food Committee, etc.) as required, and as appointed by the Director of Clinical Nutrition Services.
Complete regular audits relevant to nutrition and dietary service. Assist the Registered Dietician to develop corrective action plans to address deficiencies.
Coordinate with the dietary department to ensure menus are appropriate to meet state guidelines for portion size and nutrition, as well as resident preference.
Displays professionalism and strives for improvement in practice, manages change effectively, demonstrates assertiveness, listening & conflict resolution skills.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
Education & Experience
Completed a nutrition and dietetics technician program by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, that includes 450 hours (about 2 and a half weeks) of supervised practice experience in various community programs, healthcare and foodservice facilities and has completed at least a two-year associate degree at a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.
OR
Completed coursework in an ACEND®-accredited didactic program in dietetics and has completed at least a bachelor's degree at a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.
After completing the degree and dietetics coursework, pass a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). For more information regarding the examination, refer to the CDR website.
Completed continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration.
