Job Description:
A Surgical Technologist performs various duties as a member of the surgical team to ensure a safe and successful operative procedure. This position functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and directly reports to Surgical Services management. It is expected that the ORT III will support system wide and surgical operations initiatives and practices. In addition, this person will actively participate in the surgical operations safety plan as outlined.

As an OR Surgical Tech you need to know how to:

• Check supplies/instrumentation and equipment needed for surgical procedures and ensure they are working properly.
• Open sterile supplies and set up the table for each surgical procedure.

• Provide a sterile field f or surgical procedures. Ensure that the members of the surgical team are properly attired and assist the surgeon with draping the patient to isolate the operative site.
• Assist in the maintenance of the sterile field by applying principles of aseptic techniques and informing the surgeon/surgical team of infractions.
• Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon.
• Count sponges and sharps with the RN prior to the surgery and before the incision is closed.
• Clean and prepare the instruments for sterilization.

• Assist in the maintenance of specialty surgical services.
• Prepare the sterile dressing for the patient's incision.

Minimum Requirements (Uncertified)

• High School diploma or GED is required.
• Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) certification upon hire or obtained within 60 days of hire with prior approval.
• Graduation from formal, accredited surgical technologist program or equivalent on the job training is required.
• Registered in state of practice as a Surgical Technologist is required.

Minimum Requirements (Certified)

• High School diploma or GED is required.
• Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) certification upon hire or obtained within 60 days of hire with prior approval.
• Graduation from formal, accredited surgical technologist program or equivalent on the job training is required.
• Registered in state of practice as a Surgical Technologist is required.
• NCCT Surgical Technologist certification (TS-C) or NBSTSA certification is required.

Physical Requirements:

• Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
• Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
• Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
• Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
• Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).
• May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
