Job Summary:

The Cole Eye Institute currently has more than 20 locations across the greater Cleveland and Akron areas with plans for future growth. The Cole Eye Institute is among the world’s most advanced eye centers and is among the top in the nation. Cole Eye serves more than 330,000 patients annually – among the highest volumes in the nation. The Institute includes more than 140 staff physicians and researchers who diagnose, treat, and investigate all conditions of the eye, including macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. The Cole Eye Institute is looking to hire a full-time Certified Ophthalmic Technician to provide world class care to patients in a compassionate, attentive, and efficient out-patient setting. Our Certified Ophthalmic Technician are an integral part of the ophthalmic caregiver team and strive to provide the best ophthalmic care possible to patients. They work under the supervision of ophthalmologists to obtain and document detailed patient histories as well as to perform a series of preliminary tests to aid the physician in diagnosing and treating patients. Primary Duties include: -Performing basic patient care, ophthalmic testing procedures and initial patient examinations as directed by physician or supervisor. -Performing clinical functions and assists with basic training of non-certified technicians and students.Ideal Candidate: -Uses communication strategies to achieve desirable outcomes. -Is empathetic to the needs and concerns of patients. -Has a minimum of 1 year experience. -Can work in a fast-paced environment and be an effective and positive member of our collaborative team. -Is a detail-oriented professional, having excellent communication skills, a friendly and outgoing personality, and a willingness to learn. Responsibilities:
  • Under direction of supervisor or physician receives and prepares patients for examination or treatment.
  • Performs routine screening tests.
  • Documents patient information in the patient medical record.
  • Performs stocking, maintenance and other related duties as assigned, including maintaining exam rooms, equipment and supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of the written exam for Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.
  • Recent graduate an Ophthalmic Technology Program (not yet COT certified).

Certifications:

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work unsupervised or with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year experience providing direct patient care under the supervision of an Ophthalmologist.

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and PC.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 25 pounds.
  • May require extended periods of standing, walking or sitting.
  • Visual acuity, including the ability to distinguish colors.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
