Venue Manager

Job description:

The Venue Manager is responsible for all aspects of venue and performance management at One Longfellow Square. This *new* position is responsible for cultivating a professional experience for artists and audiences. You will work closely with the entire OLS staff and team of volunteers to develop and implement performance best practices and maintain exceptional facilities. This position entails nights and weekends, with some daytime work. This is anticipated to be a 30 hour position. The successful candidate will be a reliable, self-motivated team leader with a deep love for live music and a penchant for community-building.

Primary responsibilities:

● Manage performance experience for artist on show night to include preparing green room hospitality, welcoming artist upon load-in, ensuring artist has parking instructions/passes, introducing artist to sound engineer for sound check, coordinating with artist on show time, completing artist settlement at end of evening, cleaning the green room post-performance, and otherwise tending to artist needs.

● Manage performance experience for audience to include supervising show night personnel, ensuring adequate seating, serving as staff contact for volunteers, providing support for live stream service as needed, enlisting security services as necessary.

● Cultivate warm and inviting atmosphere for artists and audiences via stage announcements and personal interactions, as well as volunteer training and redirection as necessary.

● Maintain consistent mission, marketing and membership messaging in all customer interactions; manage social media content/shares over the weekend

● Coordinate with marketing staff to ensure current lobby materials including posters, membership materials, programming brochures, etc.

● Oversee guest services including check-in

● Manage all aspects of facilities upkeep to include monitoring cleaning schedule, managing trash, composting and recycling schedules, identifying maintenance emergency projects, overseeing laundry as needed, and ensuring cleanliness and integrity of venue seating.

● Manage and order bar inventory and stock supplies

● Ability to cross-train and substitute for sound engineers and bartender as necessary

● Schedule and supervise bar staff and volunteers

● Provide feedback on performance experiences with other OLS staff members to ensure continuity and context for future planning.

● Other duties as required

Potential additional responsibilities, based on experience:

● Oversee rental program; coordinate with OLS calendar and potential renters; manage staff for rental events, manage inquiries, contracting, etc.

● Working closely with Talent Buyer, manage bookings for local artists

● Contract administration for touring and local artists

Knowledge and Skills required:

● College degree or work experience in relevant field - preferably music venue or nonprofit arts organization

● Ability to deftly coordinate multiple priorities and personalities

● Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

● Excellent verbal communication skills

● Inventory, budget, and schedule management experience

● Demonstrated creative problem solving ability – especially in time-sensitive situations

● Previous experience managing social media sites (Facebook, Instagram)

● Capacity to stay informed of industry trends and competitive landscape.

● Knowledge of the Portland music and arts scene is a plus!

The employee will be able to assume a wide range of responsibilities, to work with a highly motivated and competent staff, and to work under pressure. The employee must demonstrate a willingness to work evenings and weekends. In addition, the employee must provide timely response to requests and deadlines and receive, process, and provide visual, verbal, and written information. The employee must be an energetic self-starter who is able to function comfortably in a team environment or independently and relates well to co-workers and the public. This position requires flexibility and the ability to manage time and multiple tasks with little supervision.
