On The Mark Utility Locating Services, Inc., is a utility management service business. Our mission is to effectively and efficiently manage, with excellence, utility in such a way as to protect life as well as our environment.

Position Summary

Perform work that involves using a variety of Locating, Detecting, Monitoring and Mapping Equipment separately or in combination to perform work for clients (Public Utility companies, consulting and private) with different scope and standard of work. This includes but not limited to locating and determine the depths of underground facilities such as gas, electric, cable/tv, street lighting, telecommunications, sanitary sewer, water, etc. Visual inspection of predefined construction areas, reading and interpretation of utility maps (if provided), to determine the presence of underground utilities is a fundamental requirement. In many instances, as-builts or utility maps do not exist or have been updated with no information, so the technician should be very familiar with underground infrastructure and how to use work site datums such as meter sets, pole drops, transformers, valve boxes, pedestals, manholes/handholes, etc. to locate underground facilities. If a technician has experience with 811 mark-out services for multiple vendors for multiple facilities and using multiple types of locating equipment, he/she may have solid foundation for doing utility locating.

The candidate should be Technically inclined, positive minded and insightful to logically follow through procedures to achieve results and aptitude for diagnosing. The Candidate should have excellent communication skills to work with a team on diverse projects and be versatile in the use of electronic devices for communications, transfer and receiving of data for effective and efficient work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Efficiently operate various types of Radio Frequency (RF) detection equipment including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment, to locate and determine possible depth of the customers underground utilities (e.g., gas, electric, cable, fiber, water, sanitary/sewer, etc.) within prescribed accuracy limits.
  • Ability to recognize fixed datums such as gas valves, electric drops, manholes, handholes, etc. for underground utilities and locate the run of the utility when maps are not provided.
  • When required, use a tablet or other devices to receive documents, and close out excavation notices, during normal business hours.
  • Read and interpret utility maps/prints, if provided, to identify the type, material, and size of underground utilities.
  • Use assigned communication equipment to effectively communicate with excavators, utility reps, and company personnel, regarding underground facilities.
  • Perform light excavation with a hand shovel, to expose buried manholes, sanitary sewer cleanouts, valve boxes, etc. when necessary.
  • Provide accurate documentation, pictures/video and/or sketches related to all locates completed.
  • Receive and respond to excavation notices during normal and possible after hours in accordance with established time requirements when required.
  • Operate a company vehicle in a safe manner and maintain a professional appearance.
  • Able to remove manhole covers, when needed, using assigned equipment to verify the location, and run of the electric or communication lines.
  • Perform work in all weather conditions, during normal and after hours.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Requirements

  • 3 years of experience in locating and marking various types of underground facilities (e.g., gas, electric, cable/fiber, etc.) including private underground utilities using multiple types of RF and GPR equipment.
  • Pass a pre-employment Drug & Alcohol Test.
  • Must possess a valid New York State (NYS) driver's license and clean Dept. of Motor Vehicle (DMV) record (1)
  • Knowledge and full understanding of NYS Code Rule 753.
  • Interpersonal communication skills.

(1) Validated by physical review of actual license which will be photocopied and put on file with Company.

Minimum Qualifications (Incl. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Ability to lift moderately heavy objects, properly use basic equipment and tools properly and safely, walk and stand for long periods of time, and perform manual labor under adverse field conditions.
  • Willingness and ability to perform manual work following verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work as a team and when required, independently to complete daily activities per daily work schedule.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to operate safely company assigned vehicle.
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. Good physical stamina is required.
