Old First Nursery School is Hiring an Assistant Teacher at Old First Nursery School, Park Slope Near Brooklyn, NY

Old First Nursery School in Park Slope, Brooklyn seeks an assistant teacher to begin in September 2024.

Founded in 1959, Old First Nursery School is the oldest parent-run cooperative nursery school in New York City. Old First Nursery School’s mission is to make every child’s first school experience successful and fun, to build a strong, supportive community, and to provide a progressive, play-based education in a warm, nurturing environment.

The assistant teacher will work closely with the head teacher to support the planning and implementation of our emergent curriculum. Old First Nursery School’s assistant teacher is responsible for assisting in the implementation of activities on a daily basis; assisting in the development of monthly lesson plans; helping to create and maintain a classroom culture of health and safety, both physical and emotional; maintaining regular communication with their supervisor, and contributing to the overall effective operation of the classroom.

Old First has a large indoor play space and a large garden with playground equipment. The school uses a play-based, Bank Street approach to education focusing on the whole child, and embraces diversity, including that of family structure. Our school has a total of sixteen students in a combination 3/4 year-old class with one head teacher (who also functions as the director of education) and one assistant teacher. Parents run all non-teaching aspects of the nursery school including hiring, admissions, maintaining the facilities, managing the finances, and booking the field trips and specialists. While we rent our space from Old First Reformed Church, we are not religiously affiliated.
