Veterinary Assistant Job Description
The Medical Department of Old Dominion Animal Health Center is committed to excellence and strives to provide the best pet care available in our area. The ODAH Center philosophy of treating client’s pets as if they are our own applies to all sectors of our organization, and, by upholding these standards; our job of caring becomes second nature. The responsibilities of the hospital assistant include but are not limited to the tasks listed below.
General Knowledge:
  • Know the range of services we provide and the different species we treat.
  • Be reasonably familiar with breeds and coat colors.
  • Follow OSHA standards. Be able to find Material Safety Data Sheets quickly in Cassie Buxton’s office.
  • Know standard medical abbreviations, i.e.; tx, sx, po, sid, bid, tid
  • Be familiar with infectious diseases, including their prevention and steps to reduce or eliminate transmission.
  • Know the most common zoonotic diseases (infections that can spread from animal to human).
General Tasks:
  • Always be in position and prepared to work at the start of each scheduled shift.
  • Be on time and clock in and clock out appropriately.
  • Maintain a professional appearance while at work, including clean and wrinkle-free clothes.
  • Name tag on and visible at all times.
  • Maintain a friendly demeanor while on the job.
  • Perform job tasks efficiently without rushing.
  • Promote a positive attitude among staff.
  • Handle stress and pressure with poise and tact.
  • Be willing and available to stay late and work through breaks when needed.
  • Have the physical strength and ability needed, and be able to lift pets and objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Engage in productive work during slow periods, such as cleaning and restocking.
  • Assist other employees as needed. Avoid waiting for co-workers to ask for assistance.
  • Participate in all relevant staff and training meetings.
  • Be prepared to handle any pet or facility emergency.
  • Show respect for clients, team members and all animals.
  • Keep outside of hospital tidy and free of debris and feces.
  • Know how to handle sharps containers and properly dispose of them.
  • Properly mix and handle cleaning chemicals following OSHA guidelines.
  • Properly clean and oil clipper equipment.
  • Set up and break down ultrasound.
  • Monitor treatment sheet in a timely manner.
Office Tasks:
  • Know phone functions, including hold and transfer.
  • Answer the phone by the third ring.
  • Know how to use the paging system.
  • Use caregivers program properly, logging in and out and going over cases with Tech/Nurse.
  • Be able to retrieve client info from computer as needed.
Patient-Admittance Tasks:
  • Cordially greet incoming clients and their pets in a friendly manner, using eye contact and always smiling, and log them in.
  • Identify patients with cage cards, neck bands, and appropriate cage signs.
  • Transfer patients to and from the hospital floor with the appropriate paperwork and items.
  • Write weight check in upper corner of cage card upon arrival.
  • Properly log in all animals belongings in computer under items left.
Medical-Records Management:
  • Understand the medical record completely.
  • Record patients weight in the three proper places in the medical record.
  • Record any services provided and initial.
  • Understand and use travel sheet properly.
  • Monitor patients hourly and record urine/stool as well as any other medical information needed, on patient’s board.
  • Monitor patients for vomit, blood, diarrhea, urine in the cage, and note on cage cards U/S/E slips hourly, and bring to attention of Dr/tech/nurse
Patient Treatment Task:
  • Prioritize tasks to maximize clients’ satisfaction and patient’s health.
  • Clean cages when they are soiled. Check for wetness, hair, and dander.
  • Set up cages for each patient’s specific needs.
  • Maximize patients comfort with a gentle and reassuring manner. Understand that actions that would constitute animal cruelty under state and local laws or the practice’s policies will be grounds for immediate termination..
  • Monitor patient behaviors and place cage signs on potentially aggressive behaviors.
  • Monitor changes in patient conditions, alert doctors to significant changes.
  • Know how to accurately obtain a temperature, respiration, and pulse.
  • Follow isolation procedures. Prevent contact between contagious animal and others.
  • Administer medications under the direction of a doctor, tech, or nurse.
  • Maintain IV catheters so fluid flows freely.
  • Monitor and maintain IV infusion pumps in accordance with doctors, techs, and nurses.
  • Cover and maintain bandages as needed to preserve function and cleanliness.
  • Administer ear treatments and clean without causing trauma.
  • Trim nails to the quick without causing bleeding.
  • Provide medical baths and dips.
  • Be able to identify if patient is in pain or cause of pain.
  • Understand how to stop bleeding by using styptic pencils and powder.
  • Restrain pets in a manner that allows necessary work to be performed, minimizes patient stress, and ensures their safety and that of other people.
  • Feed all patients unless noted otherwise. Record eating habits.
  • Collect urine and fecal samples and place both in lab with proper paper work completed.
  • Assist with euthanasia procedures. Hold at appropriate times when catheters are not used. Follow disposal procedure indicated by doctor for all deceased patients.
  • Assist doctors, techs, and nurses with EKG’s and blood pressures.
  • Assist clients to their car at the discharge time.
Radiology Tasks:
  • Maintain radiographic and shielding equipment to maximize patients and employees safety.
  • Minimize radiation hazards. Use protective equipment and wear exposure badges during radiographs.
  • Be able to set up patient information into computer or find existing patients.
  • Understand and be able to assist with basic positioning for lateral and V/D x-rays.
  • Burn x-ray images onto a CD.
Dental / Surgery Task:
  • Assist techs by restraining patients for catheters and intubation.
  • Properly place all vital monitoring equipment on patient.
  • Recover patient from anesthesia by monitoring pets swallowing at least three times before pulling trachea tube. (ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK CUFF IS DEFLATED.)
  • Following procedures, monitor patients’ body temperature every half hour until it reached 99 degrees Fahrenheit, or as directed on treatment sheet. Hot water bottles or gloves and heat lamps should be prepared for each anesthetic patient unless otherwise directed by a doctor or technician.
  • Set up and break down dental tables and surgery suite.
  • Know where instruments are stored and names of common ones.
  • Know all surgical machines, equipment and location.
  • Know proper care, cleaning, and storage of all dental equiptment.
Patient Discharge:
  • Every patient going home is to be checked for cleanliness. Brush patients and check their bottom for urine or feces. Check eyes for discharge, and check coat for wetness and smell.
  • Make sure all items left with patient go home with patient at the time of discharge.
  • Make sure that any medications prescribed are ready to go home with patient; check lockbox and fridge.
  • Offer owner assistance to their vehicle.
  • Take photos of surgical and dental patients with stuffed duck and print photo to go home with patient.
  • Bandanas on healthy patients to go home.
Emergency
  • Set up promptly for each emergency (including crash cart, making sure oxygen is plugged in, heating pad turned on and table is clean).
  • Properly handle every patient to the treatment floor.
  • Provide basic life support under Doctor’s supervision.
  • Control bleeding.
  • Know where all emergency equipment is located including drugs.
  • Know oxygen therapy and know how to set up.
  • Know how to set up and maintain oxygen cage.
Laundry
1 Know how to properly run the washer and dryers including the amount of laundry in each machine and the proper length of time for machine to run.
2 Fold all clean laundry and store in appropriate locations.
3 Laundry duty hourly checks are mandatory.
4 Clean dry filters on a regular basis.
