POSITION TITLE: Maintenance Grounds - Supervisor 

HOURS OF WORK: 8 Hour Daily/247 Calendar Days Yearly 

STATUS: Classified – Non-Exempt, Full Time 

POSITION SUMMARY:  

The job of Grounds Supervisor was established for the purpose/s of supervising grounds services and activities; overseeing assigned personnel; providing information to others; and scheduling work assignments within established timeframes and standards. 

This job reports to Manager of Facilities 

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Construct landscape items and features for the purpose of modifying or adapting facilities to specific needs. 

 Coordinate a variety of items (e.g. daily schedules, sign maintenance, outside service contracts, etc.) for the purpose of meeting district requirements. 

Implement assigned activities and/or projects for the purpose of complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.

 Inspect district playground and landscape areas (e.g. fencing, concrete/masonry, parking lots, field markings, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that staff performance is meeting established standards for proper maintenance and care. 

Install small sections and areas of concrete (e.g. pads, sidewalks, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining safe and attractive grounds. 

Maintain licenses (e.g. pesticide registrations, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the district meets all regulatory requirements. 

Maintain tools and/or equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in a safe operating condition. 

 Monitors fund balances of assigned programs and related financial activity for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate, related revenues are generated, expenses are within budget limits and/or fiscal practices are followed. 

Operates heavy equipment (e.g. back hoe, skid loaders, trailers, trucks, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining school district grounds. 

Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions. 

 Performs a variety of landscaping activities (e.g. tree trimming, planting, mowing, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining district grounds. 

Prepares written materials (e.g. reports, memos, letters, procedures, manuals, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information. 

Procures equipment, supplies and materials for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items and completing jobs efficiently. 

Recommends policies, procedures and/or actions for the purpose of providing direction for meeting the district's goals and objectives. 

Removes snow for the purpose of ensuring parking lots and sidewalks are safe for vehicles and people. 

 Responds to emergencies for the purpose of determining and implementing appropriate actions required to resolve situations. 

Reviews plans, specifications and cost estimates, etc. for the purpose of advising school organizations on purchases of landscape material, equipment, fencing, and playground equipment. 

Supervises department functions including hiring/termination recommendations, planning / scheduling / coordinating activities, training, advising, consulting, etc. for the purpose of ensuring that the department functions in a safe and efficient manner. 

Responds to emergency situations during and after hours. 

Will work graduations and other special events.

Supports assigned administrative personnel for the purpose of aiding with their administrative functions. 

Trains assigned personnel for the purpose of developing professional trade and safety awareness skills. 

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 

​​High school diploma or equivalent combined with on-the-job/technical training required.​ 

Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: analyzing; budgeting and cost control; guiding others; handing hazardous materials; leadership; managing projects/programs; operating equipment used in grounds keeping; and supervision. 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: bookkeeping/accounting practices; and safety practices. 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adaptability/flexibility; communication with persons of diverse backgrounds/knowledge/skills; decision making; leadership and direction; mechanical aptitude; meeting schedules/deadlines; prioritization; and motivating others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

This position requires the performance of heavy work which may include exerting up to 100 pounds of force, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The position involves all environmental working conditions which include but not limited to extreme cold/heat, close quarters, hazards, loud noises, and vibration. The position also requires frequent balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, talking, and walking. The position also requires occasional fingering and repetitive motion.
