Job Summary:

The Landscape Services Maintenance Manager reports to the Landscape Services Director and works closely as a team with other Landscape Services shops, Facilities Management departments, university faculty and staff customers, vendors, and contractors professionally adhering to University and Facilities Management policies and procedures.
The Landscape Services Maintenance Manager supervises the Landscape Services Maintenance Supervisors, Maintenance Services grounds keepers, Irrigation Supervisor, Irrigation technicians, Pesticide chemical applicator technician, and student workers.
The Landscape Services Maintenance Manager can also serve as the backup to the Director of Landscape Services when designated.
The Landscape Services Maintenance Manager should have strong leadership and people skills, communication, writing and computer competences, extensive landscape turf and ornamental cultural practices, maintenance experience, comprehensive plant knowledge, organizational and multitasking skills, and a passion for campus beautification.
Position requires some work during non-business hours which include evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, and when the University is closed.
Exempt employees are expected to spend whatever hours are necessary over and above the basic workweek in the completion of their work assignments.
Due to communication expectations of the position, the incumbent will be required to maintain a personal cell phone and will be required to be continually available both during and after normal working hours. The incumbent's salary includes compensation to apply toward the use of their personal cellular device.
Must be able to perform snow and ice removal tasks, and respond at any time of the day or night when scheduled by management regardless of the weather conditions. Some irregular and extra hours as needed for projects and emergencies. Emergencies frequently involve difficult working conditions.
Pesticide applicators license is required. Ability to pass a pesticide certification within 3 months of hire if not already licensed.
Must be able to work with offensive chemical odors, noisy equipment, hot, cold rainy and dusty conditions.
Physically able to do manual work to fulfill job duty support including the physical ability to lift in excess of 50 pounds occasionally.
Must use provided appropriate personal protective equipment as required (hard hat, vest, gloves, safety glasses, work boots, hearing protection, etc.).
Knowledge and ability to occasionally operate tractor, skid steer, truck with trailer and utility vehicle equipment.

Must be able to occasionally move about or remain in a stationary position 50% of the time. This requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally. Work may include digging. Position may be exposed to equipment noise, chemical smells, exposure to extreme outdoor temperatures and all types of inclement weather.

Will work closely with Facilities Management departments and staff, vendors, as well as have frequent contact with campus administration, faculty, staff customers, and students.
Knowledge and skill to read and interpret landscape plans, drawings, and pesticide labels.
Blackout Leave Periods: Landscape services has three identified blackout periods each year. No leave will be approved during these times.
Leave requests will not be approved for the month of May, August, and October until the dates for each event listed below are posted with main campus.
1. Two weeks prior to First day of School for Fall Semester
2. Two weeks before Homecoming
3. Two weeks before Spring Commencement

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

High School/GED

Eight years of related work in a landscaping, horticulture, or related technical field with three years' experience in groundskeeping/horticulture/landscape maintenance related field with proven leadership, supervisory, and management job duties. Stable work history.

Valid Driver's license before hire and maintained during employment. Pesticide applicators license required.
Ability to pass a non-commercial, ornamentals/turf pesticide applicator certification by the state of Oklahoma within 3 months of hire.

Strong attention to work detail, decision making, and organizational skills. Strong work ethic, intense drive and initiative for quality and customer service. Strong supervisory, leadership, management, and coaching skills Ability to motivate, evaluate and effectively supervise staff as a team. Ability to train and manage the work of others. Ability to multitask and coordinate projects through to completion and in a timely manner. Ability to use a shovel and other tools and equipment, lift 50 lbs and work in inclement weather to meet the physical requirements as determined by the position and job duties. Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions. Strong communication skills both written and verbal. Advanced computer skills. Knowledge and keen understanding of landscape plants, turf, contracting, maintenance practices and principles. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety instructions and procedures. Math skills to be able to teach and direct safe pesticide/chemical application as per label and calibrate appropriate equipment. Knowledge, keen understanding of irrigation systems and proper plant needs and watering. Ability to read and decipher landscape and irrigation plans and drawings. Must be able to work under minimal supervision. Ability to operate grounds and landscape related equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Management, or related Ag Science degree.

Five years' experience in landscape maintenance related to the duties of this position with proven leadership, supervisory, and management job duties. Stable work history.
