Job Summary:

The Director of the Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) will provide leadership of the Oklahoma State University technology transfer and commercialization activities. The Director reports to the Vice President for Research and will be expected to work closely with staff in the Office of the Vice President for Research, the college research officers, OSU Research Foundation personnel, as well as institute and center directors to maintain a seamless interface between research and development and the commercialization of useful research results.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Serve as a liaison between OTC and the university community (inventors, Research Directors, OSU Legal Counsel, Grants & Contracts, etc.) as well as external offices (i.e., outside patent counsel, other university tech transfer offices).
2. Drive collaboration with other OSU units directly and indirectly manage OTC staff (licensing associates, Office Manager) while encouraging professional development and personal growth for staff
3. Communicate information regarding OSU's mission, vision, and goals so that employees may increase their contributions to the university's success
4. Provide leadership and direction for strategic planning initiatives involving technology commercialization
5. Direct activities regarding the completion of invention and copyright disclosures submitted by OSU faculty, staff, and students
6. Prepare reports for inventors, deans, and the Vice President for Research
7. Write and modify University policies relating to intellectual property, technology transfer, and commercialization
8. Monitor changes in Federal law and update intellectual property constituencies through a variety of media
9. Monitor and report status of OSU-derived intellectual properties to the appropriate federal government agencies as required by law
10. Augment the expertise of current licensing associates by serving as the licensing expert in one or more of our four general areas (biotechnology, engineering, life sciences, software)

Travel will be required for professional activities, professional and partnership development and continued training. Typical work schedule is a minimum of 40 hours per week. Office hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00am-5:00pm. However, due to deadlines, travel, special events and professional development activities, additional hours will be required. Due to communication expectations of the position, the selected individual will be required to maintain cellular or other electronic communication device. The negotiated salary will already include an amount provided for the use of a personal cellular device.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study and at least five years of experience. Demonstrated expertise in technology assessment is essential, as is knowledge of current developments and trends in relevant business sectors (e.g., aerospace, information technology, agribusiness, energy, and life-sciences/biomedical/biotechnology). Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively with faculty, university administrators, state and federal agencies and the business community is required. Likewise, demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team which cuts across the university community and the university's external constituencies is necessary. A proven administrative and managerial leadership record is expected.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. / Ed.D. / J.D. is preferred. In addition to those attributes described above, OSU prefers to hire a Director of the Office of Technology Commercialization who has specific expertise in biomedical/biotechnology; such expertise maximally augments the expertise of others within the office. Technology commercialization in a university context is strongly preferred.

Additional requirements for the successful applicant will be demonstrated knowledge of relevant patent law and practices; experience in drafting and negotiating complex technology licenses and research agreements; evaluating markets for the commercialization of research results; identifying potential licensees; and implementing strategies to promote economic development through technology transfer.
