Job Description
Housed within University College, the Academic Achievement Center (AAC) provides academic support to all Ohio University students so that they can reach their highest level of academic excellence. The AAC operates four programs to assist students in fulfilling their potential:
  • Supplemental Instruction (SI) – organized group tutoring aimed at historically difficult courses
  • Peer Tutoring – one-on-one, appointment-based and drop-in tutoring for many subjects
  • The Writing Commons – one-on-one, appointment-based and drop-in writing assistance
  • Academic Coaching – one-on-one, appointment-based coaching focused on enhancing study skills
This graduate student hourly position provides professional learning experiences in tutoring, academic coaching, and Supplemental Instruction by mentoring and supervising a diverse group of student leaders, assessing and developing academic success strategies, and investigating and enhancing program success through data collection, analysis, and reporting. Though not necessary, some experience in tutoring/group learning environments is a plus.
The most important incoming skills are mastery of undergraduate course content, communication and organizational skills, and a strong desire to work with undergraduate students to support their academic success. All graduate assistants will receive extensive training and guidance to excel in this position. Because the AAC values inclusion, and works towards upholding frameworks grounded in equity and social justice, all graduate assistants receive training in diversity and cultural competency throughout the duration of their assistantship. The position also allows for optional opportunities such as hiring, onboarding, teaching and presenting.
Main responsibilities include:
Ø Tutoring or coaching individual and small groups of undergraduate students
Ø Supervising/managing undergraduate student leaders
Ø Providing constructive feedback to tutors/SI leaders through observations and one-on-one meetings
Ø Assisting in organizing and running student leader meetings
Ø Assisting in marketing and promoting the Academic Achievement Center’s programs
Ø Collecting, reporting, and evaluating data on academic support programs use and impact
Ø Advancing knowledge in and assisting with the operation and maintenance of student-centered software, procedures, and processes
Ø Applying relevant educational theories to the practice of supplemental instruction (group learning), peer tutoring, and academic coaching
Ø Interacting with professional staff from a diverse range of offices
