GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Crime Victim Services Division of the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking an Assistant Attorney General that provides legal advice, counsel, and assistance; representing the State’s interest in civil and criminal matters; reviewing, evaluating, and rendering legal opinions; preparing legal documentation; and assisting in drafting bills and amendments for legislative consideration. May train others.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

  • Performs independent investigations, including evaluating evidence and interviewing victims, witnesses, medical professionals, and law enforcement officers to conduct final ruling hearings and make final determinations based on relevant laws, rules, and policies
  • Researches legal matters, interprets and applies laws, including drafting memos, correspondence, and reports of conclusions that are relevant to the OAG’s administration of the division. Compiles section reports, drafts bills and amendments for legislative consideration.
  • Assists with management and operation of legal section of CVSD, including processing of subpoenas, and providing technical guidance to staff on legal matters
  • Performs case reviews and legal analysis for third party litigation. Communicates with civil attorneys regarding CVC’s statutory subrogation interest
  • Performs related work as assigned
  • Maintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions
  • Attends work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule
  • Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
  • Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Assistant Attorney General (AAG) I:

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited law school with Juris Doctor degree (J.D.)
  • Licensed as an attorney by the State of Texas
  • Member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas
  • Knowledge of laws, legal principles and practices relevant to victim matters
  • Skill in oral and written communication (writing sample required at time of interview, if selected)
  • Skill in legal research and negotiations
  • Skill in using a computer for work-processing and data entry/retrieval
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines
  • Skill in exercising sound judgement and effective decision making
  • Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service
  • Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA
  • Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
  • Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5%

Assistant Attorney General II – All the functions for an AAG I, PLUS:

  • Experience: One year of experience working in the following (or closely related) fields as a licensed attorney: victim services law

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Other Language: Ability to proficiently read, write, and speak Spanish

Assistant Attorney General I:

  • Experience: One year of experience as a licensed attorney
