SCHOOL COUNSELOR - GRADES 3-5

Terms of Employment: 10-month Employee
Reports to: Intermediate School Dean
Salary: Current Approved Odyssey Charter School CBA Salary Scale

Position Goal: To provide guidance, counseling, coordination, consultation, referral, and delivery of informational services. To assist in promoting parent involvement, community relations, program evaluation, and curriculum support where appropriate. The School Counselor is responsible for establishing trusting relationships with both students and parents. In addition, the counselor will provide opportunities for students to develop skills in the areas of social/personal growth, educational planning, and skills for academic success. The school counselor will work with School Leaders and teachers to identify OCS students and families who are most in need of additional services, and s/he will then lead a collaborative effort to plan for and provide the necessary support. In this effort, the school counselor will directly provide individual and group counseling to students and their families, while also working to link families with long-term counseling solutions and external support organizations. In addition, the High School Counselor will oversee all aspects of the college admissions process and post-secondary planning for all students.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must hold Active State of Delaware License and Elementary or K-12 School Counselor Certification.
  • Minimum of three years of successful professional experience at the elementary level, or one full year of supervised internship in a 3-5 grade setting, which is part of the graduate degree program in counseling.
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college/university.
  • Have the ability to cooperate with staff, parents/guardians, administration, and community resource people.
  • Proven ability to develop rapport with students.
  • Experience analyzing data to identify concerns and develope solutions.
  • Ability to empathize and understand concerns of all students in a diverse, urban setting.
  • Possess teaching skills to administer developmental guidance curriculum; organizational skills; computer literacy; and knowledge of the developmental guidance philosophy.
  • Desire to continue career improvement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Help all students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment.
  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of all students.
  • Ensure that counseling activities conform to School guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the School and community.
  • Work effectively with community organizations.
  • Positively handle change and other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Support the value of multilingual, multicultural education.
  • Support all students and keep detailed records.
  • Provide individual counseling, small group counseling, and group guidance to help students cope effectively with personal, social, academic, and family concerns.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee 504 plans.
  • Analyze student performance in the classroom to provide guidance and identify potential problems.
  • Update and maintain confidential student records.
  • Implement an effective mental/emotional/social wellness program
  • Work collaboratively with the school nurse, OCS’ Special Education Department, other OCS counselors, and all support staff.
  • Facilitate crisis intervention and prevention programs.
  • Assist with enrollment and school choice process as needed.
  • Assist in a continuous program of student orientation.
  • Attend IEP and PLCS meetings as needed.
  • Assist with the activities of student organizations.
  • Attend and assist school administrators and educators with planning and executing School-related programs and events.
  • Be well versed in promoting a growth mindset and restorative practices in a school setting.
  • Ensure that all school policies are observed during all activities.
  • Effectively communicate with the OCS community, including teachers, parents, and administrators on an ongoing basis about behavioral and academic issues.
  • Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques.
  • Obtain advance approval from the Head of Schools for all activities and expenditures.
  • Effectively partner with other members of the Lower School Administrative team regarding school climate and culture.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of Schools, or other Administrative Staff.
