Summary

Our weekly community paper is looking for a skilled Editorial & Design Specialist. This individual will play a key role in designing the layout of the newspaper and assisting in the overall production, ensuring that each edition is visually appealing, varies from week to week, is well organized, and effectively communicates the intended message. The Specialist must be quick, efficient, adept in design software, and able to successfully juggle requests, edits and timelines. There is opportunity to be creative, sophisticated and innovative while balancing the community’s existing look and feel. Organization, attention to detail and productive time management are essential to success. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Weekly design, pagination and layout of community newspaper. Includes arranging articles, images, advertisements, and other visual elements.
  • Collaborate with editors, writers, advertisers and/or photographers to understand project requirements and incorporate content into the layout effectively.
  • Liaise with Advertising Sales to update, design and conceptualize weekly advertisements.
  • Create or modify graphics, illustrations, and other visual elements to enhance the layout and overall design of the newspaper.
  • Retouch and format all photography.
  • Assist in the overall production of the newspaper, including photo selection and coordination, and assisting production team with research, fact checking, and gathering information for press pieces.
  • Review and proofread layouts to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to brand guidelines and design standards.
  • Copyedit and proofread editorial for accuracy, grammar, and adherence to style guidelines as needed.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Package and prepare file for print.
  • Content collection, coordination and layout of weekly This Week at The Reef brochure.
  • Support Communications Department, including production of various materials such as posters, 

Qualifications

  • Experience in layout design and production, preferably in a newspaper/publishing environment or design agency.
  • Graphic design experience required.
  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop required.
  • Eye for typography, composition and layout.
  • Excellent attention to detail required.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Thorough proofreading skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and multitask effectively.
  • Photography interest a plus but not required.
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, communications, journalism, or a related field a plus.

Language Skills

Must be able to speak and comprehend the English language in order to communicate with co-workers and fully understand job assignments.

Attendance, Appearance and Conduct:

Regular attendance in conformance with the standards, which may be established by Ocean Reef Club from time to time, is essential to the successful performance of this position. Associates with irregular attendance will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry and report deadlines, associate may be required to work varying schedules to meet the business needs of the Club and report deadlines.

Proper grooming is required by all associates and is described in detail in the Associates Handbook. Associates should review this policy and make sure that at all times they present themselves for shifts looking clean, neat and professional. 

As a condition of employment, all associates agree to fully comply with Ocean Reef Club rules and regulations for the safe and efficient operation of Club facilities. Associates who violate Club rules and regulations will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
