Oberlin is Hiring an Associate Director of Volunteer Engagement Near Oberlin, OH

Oberlin College and Conservatory is seeking an Associate Director of Volunteer Engagement to create, coordinate, and manage engaging, fulfilling, and fun experiences for volunteers across many areas of the institution.
Responsibilities
The Associate Director will be responsible for completing an initial and subsequent annual review of Oberlin’s volunteer opportunities; leading efforts to design and refine a consistent, scalable volunteer experience; coordinating and tracking engagement opportunities with both internal and external partners; serving as the staff liaison for various alumni groups; and coordinating with other staff members to create positive, consistent volunteer experiences with Oberlin. This position plays a vital role in identifying future leaders of Oberlin’s volunteer activities, philanthropic opportunities, and building Oberlin pride among its 42,000 alumni worldwide.
Work is accomplished in an in-office environment that values creativity, integrity, diversity, respect, fun, and team-spirit.
Essential Job Functions
  • Review and design the volunteer experience from the volunteer’s perspective. Design and manage a positive, efficient, and effective process to recruit, onboard, and guide volunteers to specific roles and opportunities; develop a stewardship plan for them; and create a consistent experience for volunteers within the Office of Alumni Engagement and, as much as possible, within volunteer programs of campus partners.
  • Build relationships with campus partners (e.g., Athletics, Career Exploration and Development, Office of Admissions, etc.) to create a program that will effectively promote volunteer opportunities and measure college-wide volunteer activity. Work with campus partners to develop systems to track, promote, and celebrate volunteerism; identify how campus volunteers can help achieve institutional goals; work with campus partners to lift up the values of diversity and inclusion, and broaden representation and participation in existing programs.
  • Conduct an annual review of volunteer opportunities/roles at Oberlin College and Conservatory (with particular emphasis on those activities under the auspices of the Office of Alumni Engagement). Use this annual review to evaluate program activities and results, identify changes that will reduce obstacles and take advantage of opportunities, and identify those whose service crosses departments as well as opportunities to connect volunteers with giving and other volunteer opportunities.
  • Work with campus partners to design a system to capture college-wide volunteerism in Oberlin’s alumni database (Raiser’s Edge). Use the results of this tracking to identify opportunities to increase engagement, discover potential donors, celebrate outstanding volunteerism, and accurately report annual volunteerism on individual and aggregate levels.
  • Manage specific class- and affinity-based volunteer groups. Office of Alumni Engagement team members manage a variety of class-based volunteers, comprising alumni with class-based, identity-based, and academically/subject-based affinities. The Associate Director will directly manage certain groups and work with colleagues to ensure consistency and efficiency across the team for groups managed by others.
Marginal Job Functions
  • Provide support, as needed, to the efforts of the Alumni Leadership Council, working with the Assistant Vice President for Alumni Engagement.
  • In conjunction with other members of the Alumni Engagement team, maintain all electronic systems as they relate to this work, including Drupal (webpage maintenance and editing), CVent and Form Group (registrations), Emma (email), Raiser’s Edge (database), and others.
  • Act as staff representative at events as necessary, including evening and weekend programs. Occasional overnight travel is possible, but rare.
  • Remain current on and inspired by best practices in alumni engagement.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 2-4 years of alumni relations, volunteer/donor management, or equivalent experience required.
  • Demonstrated success in volunteer management strongly desired.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and comfort using them in both 1:1 and group settings.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of personalities in both positive and challenging situations.
  • Respect and enthusiasm for diversity.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
Desired Qualifications
Compensation
A generous compensation package will be offered to the successful candidate, including an excellent benefits package, liberal vacation time, and tuition remission for eligible dependents and 35 days of paid PTO.
