Oberlin College Libraries seek an enthusiastic, innovative, and highly competent Art Librarian to manage the collections of the Clarence Ward Art Library and serve as subject specialist. The Art Library serves the Allen Memorial Art Museum, the departments of art history and studio art, and the campus as a whole. The Art Librarian is part of a dynamic team of librarians providing research support and instruction to the Oberlin community through collaborative efforts around collection development, information literacy, programming, and outreach.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong service-oriented approach to assisting library patrons and the ability to work productively with patrons at all levels. We are looking for a librarian who thinks strategically and can present a clear vision for the direction of the Art Library, while working collaboratively and collegially with colleagues and faculty

The position operates in coordination with others in the research and instruction group and the Associate Director for Public Services to ensure consistent access services and outstanding user experience across Oberlin libraries. The position also contributes to planning, policy development, resource management, and decision-making as a member of the Libraries’ leadership team.

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Art Library, managing Art Library spaces to achieve an environment that inspires and facilitates learning, creativity, and research activities.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with faculty to ensure effective and efficient selection of library resources in Art and Art History and other assigned collection liaison areas.
  • Proactively explore, assess, and adopt new technologies for the management and distribution of art research information; identify opportunities for library engagement with both digital and traditional art scholarship.
  • Serve as the main public interaction point for art library research queries and conduct library orientation sessions and training as necessary, ensuring responsive, and thorough research assistance.
  • Contribute to the libraries’ communication efforts by organizing library events, promoting collections, and contributing stories to social media, newsletters, etc.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Special Collections, VIsual Resources, and Archives to share resources and information, teach effectively with primary sources, and advise on digital projects undertaken by the DIgital Collaborative unit.
  • Develop and work toward library goals in harmony with the Libraries’ evolving strategic plan.
  • Develop and manage the Art Library’s budget.
  • Supervise the Art Library Assistant and student workers.
  • Participate in professional organizations and actively share with colleagues as part of a continuing commitment to promote best professional practice.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with prospective and established donors to provide support for library programs and work to identify and secure grant funding for special projects.
  • Promote assessment efforts to help identify improvements in library operations; prepare the library’s annual report; and ensure that the highest standards for storage, security, and use of the collection.
  • Demonstrate professional development through scholarly or creative activities and annual reflective analysis.
  • Serve on library committees and college-wide committees.
  • Foster a creative, collaborative, and team-oriented work environment.

Required Qualifications
  • ALA-accredited MLS or its equivalent required.
  • Second graduate degree in art history or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in an academic or museum library.
  • Demonstrated administrative, organizational, supervisory, and project management experience, including experience managing budgets.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and understanding of information technology systems and platforms applicable to research collections, including traditional integrated library systems.
  • High level competencies employing print and digital resources in art history and the humanities.
  • Outstanding communication skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively teach and present.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Alma/Ex Libris.
  • Proven ability to analyze, develop, and organize art-related resources for advanced research, teaching, and learning
  • Relevant experiences and broad background in emerging technologies in instructional initiatives
  • Knowledge of scholarly communication techniques, technologies, and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with best practices related to library technology and digital projects.
  • Demonstrated record of creativity and innovative thinking.
Compensation
Within the range established for this position, salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes an excellent benefits package.
