Requisition Id 10271 Overview: The Environment, Safety, Health, and Quanity Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for a Waste Management Specialist (WMS) position within the Radiological Engineering Support Group of the Transportation and Waste Management Division (TWMD). ORNL is the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The radiological WMS will become a subject matter expert for most aspects of radioactive waste management. The WMS is responsible for independently solving a variety of complex technical problems related to radiological waste management and other technical projects supported by the TWMD. Professional experience includes familiarity with the requirements of radiological characterization, regulatory-compliance, packaging, Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements, Nevada Nuclear Security Site (NNSS) disposal, Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) requirements and audit support. The primary function of the WMS position is to assist the ORNL waste generators with the characterization of ORNL radioactive waste Major Duties/Responsibilities: * Provide expert technical direction as an ORNL Subject Matter Expert for the characterization and disposition of all ORNL radioactive streams including radioactive waste generated by nuclear accelerators, nuclear reactors, isotope production, radiochemical research, irradiated nuclear fuel testing, irradiated metal interrogation, environmental cleanup, laboratory analysis, and biological research.
* Develop characterization techniques to support characterization and packaging of high activity radioactive waste while balancing impacts of ALARA, DOT criteria and facility limitations.
* Develop peer-reviewed waste management calculations and technical position papers.
* Perform regulatory reviews of documentation for compliance.
* Develop waste management procedures and spreadsheet application tools.
* Assist with treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDF) interface.
* Support external and internal audits and assessments of the waste management program.
* Lead multiple characterization projects simultaneously.
* May guide and mentor assistant staff members performing Waste Management Specialist functions. Basic Qualifications: * Must have at least 5 years of relevant experience performing radioactive waste management with most of the experience in waste characterization and certification
* Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or other technical studies.
* Familiarity with Microshield© software application, Microsoft Excel, and gamma spectrum analysis principles and applications.
* Experience with the review and application of laboratory analysis to characterize the radioactive and chemical constituents of waste.
* Experience characterizing radioactive waste with several sources of radioactive contamination.
* Must be capable of obtaining a DOE "Q" clearance.
* Proficient in application of standard workplace personal computer applications Preferred Qualifications: * Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering.
* Radioactive waste management experience at a DOE site.
* Extensive experience with Microshield© software application.
* Extensive experience with sample-based radioactive waste characterization.
* Experience in characterizing radioactive waste that is generated by nuclear accelerators, nuclear reactors, hot cell facilities, and chemical separation processes.
