Job Description

IMPORTANT NOTE:

NYC Department of Finance (DOF) is responsible for administering the tax revenue laws of the city fairly, efficiently, and transparently to instill public confidence and encourage compliance while providing exceptional customer service.
The Sheriff’s Office serves and enforces court mandates, orders of protection, warrants, decrees, and property seizures. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office conducts criminal investigations of real property fraud, tax crimes, and the trafficking of illegal and untaxed tobacco products and synthetic narcotics, and monitors defendants referred by the courts for electronic monitoring.
Under supervision, with some latitude for independent initiative and judgement, the Investigator performs professional investigations of cases. They will conduct thorough investigations into various cases including but not limited to violations of law. The investigator will gather evidence, maintain accuracy and organize cases within the New York city Sheriff's office.
Duties and responsibilities:
  • Input and maintain cases into databases.
  • Locate and identify addresses for potential defendants to be served.
  • Identify and make phone calls of individuals.
  • May search public and private records.
  • Examines and analyzes records and documents.
  • Prepares written and statistical reports.
  • Utilizes computer systems to assist in the processing of investigations.
  • May testify at hearings and in court proceedings.
  • May proficiently manage other various tasks and responsibilities at the discretion of the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications

1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization, and three years of satisfactory full-time
experience as an investigator evaluating credit worthiness, searching for assets, verifying information concerning education, experience, and other personal qualifications bearing upon character and fitness for employment; or performing investigations involving the research, compilation and/or location of evidence or information in order to build a case or uncover activities of a criminal, corrupt, unlawful or unethical nature; or
2. An associate degree from an accredited college or university or 60 semester credits from an accredited college and two years of satisfactory full time experience as described in “1” above; or
3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; or
4. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1”, “2”, or “3” above.
