Job Description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.
The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) supports the Department by acquiring, distributing, installing and maintaining Local Area Networks, personal computers, mainframe computers, software, and data communications networks. ITSD also plans and coordinates the implementation of advanced technology.
The selected candidate will:
  • Perform SQL Server database administration functions, including maintenance of multiple environments (development, testing and production), patching, troubleshooting, SSIS and SSRS deployments and security management.
  • Monitor and analyze data platform to ensure database is available, secure, healthy, efficient and recoverable as per expectations.
  • Build and manage HA and DR architectures like Clustering, Replication and Always on.
  • Implementing and managing the physical databases of mission critical systems capacity planning to determine future storage needs.
  • Collaborate with application owners to develop a seamless process to migrate their schema and data to data platform.
  • Partner with development and quality assurance teams to deliver robust, quality, on-time solutions.
  • Supervise subordinates, lead projects and coordinating multi-team operations.
  • Monitor the installation of SQL Server, configuration, patching and database back-up recovery, database performance tuning and maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

Professional/Vendor Certification(s) in database administration that is required for the position to be filled. In addition, you must have one of the following:
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, and two years of satisfactory fulltime (not classroom based) experience in database administration. Experience must include database design, configuration, installation, troubleshooting, integration, performance monitoring, maintenance, enhancement, and security management;
2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) information technology experience (IT) of which at least two years must have been database administration experience as described in "1" above; OR
3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and/or experience equivalent to “1” or “2” above. Undergraduate education may be substituted for experience on the basis that 30 undergraduate semester credits from
an accredited college or university is equivalent to 6 months of information technology experience, but may not be substituted for the required database administration experience. A masters degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of database administration experience. However, all candidates must have at least one year of satisfactory full-time (not classroom based) database administration experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills
Preferred skills include: -Strong understanding of database structures, principles and practices. -Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server 2014/2016/2017/2019. -Proficiency in SQL Server installation, configuration, patching and database back-up recovery. -Knowlege with Windows server, Security delegation, Storage components. -Solid knowledge of SQL Server HADR Solution, Data Replication, SSIS and SSRS. -Expert experience in platform monitoring, detect and troubleshoot SQL Server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention. -Experience in database performance tuning and maintenance with outstanding troubleshooting capabilities. -Ability to conduct research into infrastructure and database issues, standards and products as required. -Experience with data concurrently and enthusiastic to learn new technologies. -Knowledge of third party DBA tools and applications. -Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws and also comply with data security. -Technical documentation skills.
