The New York City Anti-Violence Project (AVP) is seeking an experienced Director of Finance and Operations.

The New York City Anti-Violence Project (AVP) envisions a world in which all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ), and HIV-affected people are safe, respected, and live free from violence. AVP works to empower LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities and allies to end all forms of violence through organizing and education, and supports survivors through counseling, advocacy, and legal representation.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

The Director of Finance and Operations leads three critical areas of AVP’s functions: Finance, Operations and Human Resources. 

  • The Director manages the finance team, providing planning and oversight for all fiscal functions of the agency including accounting, grants administration and management, and budgeting. 
  • They provide leadership for a human resources infrastructure, policies and benefits, so that all staff can bring their best selves and do their best work.
  • They facilitate smooth organizational operations and IT systems, ensuring supportive workplaces for AVP’s physical and virtual work.

This position leads a team of five staff and directly supervises three staff: Senior Finance and Contracts Manager, Senior Manager of Operations and Human Resources, Senior Finance Administrator. They are a part of the senior management team and report to the Executive Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide Visionary Leadership to shape the department’s work and ensure that AVP is truly a safe, welcoming place for staff and community members that matches our anti-oppressive, survivor-centered and trauma-informed framework.

  • Lead strategic visioning for the department and help lead organization-wide visioning.
  • Foster a positive, healthy, sustainable, innovative, results-oriented work environment.
  • Participate in AVP’s Management Team.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to ensure communication and cooperation.
  • Participate in AVP’s staff-led Anti-Oppression projects and initiatives.
  • Help ensure that AVP Board of Directors are knowledgeable about the organization’s finances, human resources and operations by preparing reports and presentations and staffing board Finance and Audit committees. 
  • Support fundraising efforts by attending select events and developing and maintaining relationships with funders, as needed. 

Oversee Fiscal Systems and Management

  • With staff and the Board of Directors, generate the agency’s annual budget and periodically reforecast the budget throughout the year. 
  • In collaboration with Senior Finance and Contracts manager, manage staff responsible for day-to-day accounting and bookkeeping systems (using FUND EZ, Bill.com, and other applications). 
  • Maintain updated Fiscal Policies and Procedures.
  • With support from Senior Finance Administrator, develop, maintain and review financial reports to be presented regularly to Department Directors, Executive Director and the Board.
  • Manage the production of all annual financial statements, including supervising audit, Form 990 and Uniform Guidance.
  • Administer city, state and federal government contracts and support the administration of corporate and foundation grants through creating and modifying budgets, allocating staff time, monitoring and tracking expenditures applications and reports.

Oversee Human Resources and Workplace Culture Initiatives

  • Manage Human Resources and Employee Benefits.
  • Manage and maintain a collaborative working relationship with the staff union and lead the Management team that engages in contract negotiations.
  • Supervise maintenance of personnel records and administer AVP benefits plans and payroll.
  • Ensure that all staff receive appropriate supervision and support, including coordinating staff trainings, coaching staff on effective supervision, assisting with individual performance management and improvement, periodically reviewing salary scale, overseeing staff evaluation processes.
  • Support HR and Operations staff, providing guidance and assistance with hiring processes and ensuring consistent staff onboarding and offboarding.

Lead Operations and Office Management

  • In collaboration with the Senior Manager of HR and Operations, oversee responsibility for facilities in downtown Manhattan office, continue to evaluate office space needs, and prepare for and lead possible real estate search and office move in 2025.In collaboration with Senior Manager of HR and Operations, oversee responsibility for all of IT, computer network and security system management to increase technological capacity and security.
  • Prepare and maintain all records required by law and associated with the program’s 501c3 status.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least eight years of nonprofit administration experience.
  • A minimum of four years each of experience with (1) financial management and (2) human resources management.
  • A minimum of four years of experience supervising staff, with demonstrated experience building a highly collaborative and supportive team culture.
  • Demonstrated deep knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and fund accounting principles.
  • Familiarity with federal, state and city contract processes a plus.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working to end violence within and against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities.
  • Superior oral, written, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be highly organized, solution-oriented and willing to roll up sleeves to get the job done.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating anti-racism, anti-oppression and intersectional values and principles into daily practice.

This is a director-level, exempt position with a salary range of $95,000 – $110,000, depending on experience.

Hours are generally 10am – 6pm, Monday through Thursday and 10-2pm on Friday. This position may require some work during the evening and/or weekend to support AVP programming. This position is based in the AVP office in Manhattan and will require a hybrid of both remote and in-person work.
