The LVN/LPN provides planned and highly skilled nursing care for the immediate pre-operative & postoperative patient. Provides continuous patient surveillance, thereby allowing early recognition and immediate emergency treatment of medical or surgical complications, which may arise in any patient no matter how simple the operative procedure. In addition to the LVN/LPN Staff Nurse Responsibilities and Performance Standards, the following standards define the level of practice required of the LVN/LPN.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and revises patient’s care in accordance with physician’s orders, patient’s needs, and Policies & Procedures during the postoperative phase.
• Receives patient and brief report from anesthesia personnel and OR nurse regarding patient’s tolerance of procedure and current status.
• Conducts rapid multi-system assessment of post anesthesia patient; respiration, and O2 saturation on arrival and for patients recovering from MAC (monitored anesthesia care for the patients recovering from general anesthesia.
• Ensures minimum recovery time for MAC patients and general anesthesia patients; either category of patient will be kept longer if condition warrants.Administers oral, parenteral, or eye drops etc. as ordered and documents treatment.
• Assures that the patient is never left unattended in PACU.Evaluates patient for discharge using post anesthesia recovery scoring on PACU record and discharges criteria as written in the PACU section of the Policy & Procedure Manual.
• Reports any unusual reactions of patient to medications or treatments and obtains surgeon’s or anesthesiologist’s approval for discharge.
• Evaluates patient’s awareness and understanding and provides education / instruction to patient or responsible adult as appropriate regarding postoperative care, diet, activity level, postoperative appointment date and time.
• Assesses patient’s level of pain on 0-10 scale, with 0 meaning "no pain", 1 the lowest level and 10 the highest level.
• Discharges the patient home by escorting the patient to the waiting area and providing any assistance needed

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

• Education: Successfully completed an accredited licensed vocational school of nursing
• License / Certification: Current AZ license for vocational nursing. Current BCLS. I.V. certification preferred but not required.
• Bilingual Spanish Highly Preferred
