Description & Requirements

VetMED, a 24/7 emergency and specialty veterinary hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, has openings for fourth-year veterinary student externs. Our externships are designed with a focus on a single discipline, and students are encouraged to participate in patient rounds, interact with clients, create diagnostic and treatment plans, and scrub into surgery. You will gain real-world proficiency in emergency and specialty case management.

Program Overview:

Most of our student externs complete two- or four-week rotations, but we can accommodate longer stays. The typical schedule includes four 10-hour day shifts per week, but you can request overnights or weekends for additional emergency case exposure. You will focus on one specialty, but you can follow your cases from start to finish across multiple services, as needed. Externs participate in morning rounds, see patients, communicate with clients, create treatment plans, and assist during procedures and surgeries. Four-week or longer externships culminate in a grand rounds case presentation.

Dermatology and allergy

Diagnostic imaging

Neurology and neurosurgery

Soft tissue and orthopedic surgery
