Novelis Oswego Manufacturing Facility is Hiring an Electrical Technologist - Motor Drive and Breakers Near Oswego, NY

Position Overview

Novelis Oswego has a great opportunity for an Electrical Motor, Drives, and Breaker Technologist! This position is responsible for providing support in the design and maintenance of Electrical and Automation systems and controls with an emphasis and focus on motors, drives and breakers. The incumbent provides expertise and directs the activities of others engaged in activities related to electrical motor, drives and breaker maintenance, engineering, reliability, and associated automation, and controls to achieve overall plant goals relating to quality, throughput, and efficiency.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Develop and support Reliability and Maintenance practices to guarantee full utilization of Novelis DC and AC motors, enabling continuity of the operations.
  • Develop strong collaboration with and between plants and be an advocate of Novelis' cultural beliefs. 
  • Ensure Novelis’s EHS values and standards are complied with by Novelis craftsmen and contractors assigned to responsible jobs.. 
  • Support or assist in developing/revising DC/AC motors maintenance, storage and rebuild standards and best practices. 
  • Conduct and oversee training of craft resources for DC/AC motors corrective and proactive maintenance. 
  • Support or assist as a team member in the replacement of DC motors with AC motors 
  • The selection of electrical equipment and coordination of the completion of electrical layout drawings, cable sizing and selection, routing and schedule drawings as required to complete the defined project.
  • Instrument and control device selection, sizing, and specification as required for the defined projects.
  • Troubleshooting automation control problems and improve system performance in manufacturing environment.
  • Ensure maintainability and reliability of low voltage electrical distribution and motor controls.
  • The completion of or coordination of updating electrical documentation using CAD software.
  • Work with contractors on project specification, control plan, system testing and commissioning.
  • The planning, organizing and supervising of AC/DC motor bearings, brush, and commutator inspection and maintenance.
  • Must complete or oversee investigation, troubleshooting, testing, inspection, replacement, upgrade, and repairs of HV, MV, LV industrial switchgear (vac, air, & gas circuit breakers, disconnect switches, contactors, etc.
  • Work with Utilities/Facilities management and engineers in executing various mill shutdowns and power outages.
  • Work with engineers in completing the equipment location plans, cable tray routing and loading, build and shelter electrical layouts and details.
  • Support area engineers for specifying process controls systems and detail hardware required for the plant control system including panel layout and design, PLC hardware, Allen Bradley, or Siemens controls.

Qualifications

  • 2 year degree in Electrical Technology or related field or equivalent field experience and professional training
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in Industrial Electrical reliability and maintenance 
  • Working knowledge of MS Office, CMMS and use of ERP systems 
  • Knowledge of:
    • Large DC and AC motors, synchronous and inductive; 
    • Converters and Inverters in General AC / DC and AC / AC; 
    • PLC’s and controllers, preferably Siemens, ABB, Rockwell, GE. 
    • Substations and Transformers: Basic knowledge of Power Generation and Distribution, 138kv, 13.8kv, 440V
  • Experience with managing craftsmen on a daily basis or in large projects
  • .
  • Experience with VFDs and motion control and AC/DC motor drives
  • Fluent in electrical safety practices
  • A solid understanding of three phase power distribution and associated loads.
  • A thorough understanding of industrial electrical schematics and diagrams.
  • Be capable of using or learning AutoCAD
  • Demonstrated history of creative problem solving and a strong work ethic

Preferred Qualifications 

  • 4 year degree in Electrical, Electronic or other related Engineering/Technologist field 
  • Experience with Reliability tools: FMEA, Root Cause Analysis, basic reliability modeling 
  • Experience with programming and troubleshooting of PLCs, IO systems, and industrial communication
  • Work experience in aluminum or steel mills
