Northern Plains Railroad is Hiring a Superintendent - Industrial Switching - Grand Forks ND Near Grand Forks, ND

Job Title: Superintendent Department: IndustrialSwitching Division: Northern Plains Rail Services Reports to: Director Industrial Switching Job Status: Full Time Schedule: Varies. Weekend duty, on-call, overtime & travel 80-100%

Summary:

This position at Northern Plains Rail Companies, plans, directs, coordinates, trains employees and efficiency tests employees at all Industrial Switching locations. Manages aggressive objectives to promote safety at all Industrial Switching locations, create a safe work environment, ability to train new employees in all aspects of switching operations, maintain and enhance our customer relationships at all Industrial Switching locations and can fill in for any immediate vacancies if needed across the system. This position is also responsible for 24/7 incident response via phone or travel if directed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities at NPRC are, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for financial results, risk management, and all personnel involved in switching operations.
  • Manages all aspects of transportation to ensure that crews work safely and trains run efficiently.
  • Manages all locations with contract switching.
  • Locates new prospects, designs competitive service, and presents these to customers.
  • Responsible for operations planning and customer satisfaction.
  • Ensures that all aspects of every operation exceed the safety requirements of the NPR, the customers facility, and State and Federal regulations.
  • Offers and manages other services provided by related companies: track design, track construction, car maintenance, and locomotive maintenance.
  • Responsible for all other duties as assigned by the Director of Industrial Switching.

  • Must have specific job knowledge in all aspects of rail operations.
  • Must possess leadership and communication skills to satisfy a wide range of customers, and to manage operations in several sites and many remote locations.
  • Possess management and leadership skills to effectively build a team environment.
  • Have the ability to work independently in a high energy environment and to confidently develop long-term business relationships
  • Valid drivers license.

Physical Demands:

NPRC may make reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the physical demands listed below:
  • Continuous: Balancing, bending, stairs-ascend/descend, hearing & vision, sitting, and must be able to exert a negligible amount of force. Driving and standing.
  • Frequent: Walking, crawling, kneeling & reaching above & below shoulder. Lift & carry up to 75 lbs-rail supplies, knuckles, back pack blower, etc.
  • Occasional: Lift & carry hand tools-shovel, broom, lantern, etc. less than 10 lbs., lift & carry back pack snow blower 20-40 lbs., climbing, crouching, climbing ladders-ascend/descend, stooping & twisting.
  • Rare: Crouching, jogging, crawling, lift & carry End-of Train Device over 50 lbs.
  • Ability to talk and hear accurately in person, via the telephone, or via two-way radio.
  • Must possess at least 20/40 in each eye with or without corrective lenses.
  • Must be able to recognize and distinguish colors displayed by signals, signs, etc.
  • Must possess an average hearing threshold (in the better ear) of 40db at 500HZ, 1000HZ, and 2000HZ, aided or unaided.
  • May require travel to various facilities and provide additional services.

Environmental:

Continuous:Works in hot/cold temperatures, on-call & travel required. Problem solving, analytical ability, oral & written communications, organization, interpersonal skills, concentration, perception, creativity, working with interruptions, eye/hand coordination, dexterity-foot pedals.
Frequent: Exposure to electrical hazards, works inside & outside, exposure to noise, works at unprotected heights, shift work, walk on uneven or slippery surfaces, works in wet conditions, works with others & alone, moving machinery. Calculating. Dexterity-handling-holding, grasping, wrist motion-repetitive flexion/rotation.
Occasional: Travel required, stand on concrete, shift work, and safely ride the side of railcars. Works in cramped quarters, dust/smoke and exposure to chemicals, vibration, and fingering-picking, pinching & using a calculator.
Rare:Money handling, toxic materials, exposure to fumes/odors/grease/oil.

Education and Training:

  • High School Diploma or higher.
  • 5 years supervisory experience
  • 5 years railroad experience

Must have and maintain an insurable driving status which includes but is not limited to NPR driver provisions.
