Northern Plains Railroad is Hiring a Corporate Controller Near Grand Forks, ND

Job Title: Corporate Controller Department: Accounting Reports to: CFO

Job Status: Full Time Schedule: Varies. M-F 8:00-4:30

Summary:

The Corporate Controller works in collaboration with the CFO and department leaders on improving financial success of the company.The Controller position is accountable for the accounting operations of the company. This includes the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate and manage risk. The Controller is also responsible for enhancing the accuracy of the company's reported financial results and ensuring that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards. The Controller will also take a lead role in IT system coordination from implementation to enhancements and updates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities but are not limited to:

Management

  • Maintains and enforces a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives; general ledger management
  • Oversee the accounting operations of all affiliated companies, especially their control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures

Treasury functions; bank and vendor relationship management

Responsible for supervision and direction of the accounting team

  • Manage outsourced functions

Risk Management/Compliance

  • Management of accounting practices, processes and reporting in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings

Administrator of Company Insurance policies

    • Annual Renewal
    • Administration of Certificates and ID Cards
    • Claims management
    • Liaison with Insurance Broker and relationship management

Cost & Project Accounting

Oversee Management of cost & project accounting for Company Contracting entities

o Job Cost administration for projects and locations

o Prepare & Analyze project financial performance

o Classification of Project/Location costs & revenues

o Prepare monthly accounting reports for Management use

o Analysis of project margins, completion, & close-out

o Track and determine financial performance by analyzing actual results in comparisons with budgets

Reporting

  • Issue timely and complete financial statements
  • Coordinate the preparation of the corporate annual report
  • Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
  • Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
  • Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations

General Accounting Duties

  • Lead month end processing
    • General Ledger closing
    • Company consolidation
    • Financial statement preparation
  • Participate in fiscal year end annual financial Review process
  • Lead Annual Budget preparation and Capital Purchase requests
  • Coordination and preparation of information for external accountants and auditors
  • Assist CFO with various reporting items (month-end reporting, quarterly/annual sales and use tax reports, aged receivables, etc.)
  • Monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintaining accounting system accuracy
  • Overseeing accounting procedures to ensure compliance with regulations
  • Other duties as assigned

Competencies

Understanding of information systems and the concept of dashboards and business intelligence reporting

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Must be energetic, motivated, and adaptable to progress-based change

Working knowledge of accounting principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Prior supervisory experience leading multi-functional teams, preference for multi-location leadership

  • Ability to manage and maintain confidential information

Ability to work with a high level of autonomy and support business decision making

  • Ability to effectively plan, organize and use independent judgement to meet necessary deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Handling multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment

Physical Demands:

  • Good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity and visual acuity

Education and Training:

  • The controller candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration, or equivalent business experience and 10 years of progressively responsible experience Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of accounting and supervisory experience

Strong Microsoft Office Suite knowledge, with the ability to manipulate and develop data into workable models and projections.

Familiarity with accounting ERP software/systems.

Position to be located at either Grand Forks or Fordville, ND with candidate flexibility to travel between locations as needed.
