Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications

Overview
The Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at Northern Illinois University (NIU) is a multidisciplinary center that serves as the focal point for the study of, and engagement with, Southeast Asia. The Center's mission includes research and scholarship on the region, educational activities that include language instruction in a wide range of Southeast Asian languages, outreach to the Northern Illinois region and engagement with partners in Southeast Asia on projects of mutual benefit. The center is built around faculty and staff associates drawn from across multiple departments and works in cooperation with related NIU units such as the Center for Burma Studies, the Donn V. Hart Southeast Asia Collection and the Division of International Programs.
The CSEAS was established in 1963 at NIU in DeKalb. Located 60 miles west of Chicago, NIU is a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate university with approximately 16,500 students. NIU is included in the Doctoral/Research Universities-Extensive category of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of teaching and is a member of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges.

Position Summary
The Director of CSEAS, in collaboration with the Assistant Director, CSEAS staff and the CSEAS Council Associates is responsible for promoting and encouraging Southeast Asian Studies at NIU through grant writing and administration, maintaining active connections across departments and with administration at NIU and with other SEA Centers in the U.S. as well as with governments and universities in the region, and through teaching, outreach and fundraising.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), in collaboration with the Assistant Director, CSEAS staff and CSEAS associates:
  • Should be a person of vision who possesses leadership qualities that will advance the excellence and reputation of the center locally, nationally and internationally;
  • Should work closely with center associates and its committees in a collegial and collaborative relationship;
  • Oversees the writing and submission of Department of Education Title VI grant proposals and reports as well as coordinating and implementing associated projects and activities essential in maintaining the center's National Resource Center status;
  • Creatively seeks external grants (including those from the U.S. Department of State and private entities) for center programs, projects and activities;
  • Oversees the preparation of center budgets, approves budget allocations and prepares budget reports as required;
  • Is responsible for promoting and encouraging Southeast Asian Studies at NIU, including the recruitment of undergraduate minors as well as graduate students seeking degrees related to Southeast Asian topics;
  • Represents the center at occasional scholarly conferences and oversees weekly center forums during the academic year;
  • Oversees the daily management of the center, including supervision of center personnel
  • Coordinates with center associates and NIU Press on Southeast Asia series publications program and oversees center communications, including the center's web presence, news profile and marketing efforts;
  • Promotes and enhances the University Libraries' Donn V. Hart Southeast Asia Collection;
  • Teaches one course per semester in his/her home department, preferably related to Southeast Asia; and
  • Will be involved in fund-raising, cultivating contacts with alumni and promoting the visibility of CSEAS.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in a Southeast Asian field, discipline open.
  • Tenurable with a rank of Associate or Full Professor
  • High level of proficiency in at least one Southeast Asian language.
  • Administrative experience
  • History of successful grant writing, with federal grant experience preferred.

Additional Requirements
  • Must be able to work in a multi-disciplinary environment, across departments, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Center for Burma Studies, and the Division of International Programming.
