About the Opportunity The Assistant Director - Supplemental Academic Services (SAS) is part of a team that provides supplemental academic support to students within CPS and, on a contractual basis, across other colleges at Northeastern University. Under the direction of the CPS SAS Director, the Assistant Director facilitates the daily operations of the International Tutoring Center (ITC) and supplemental writing supports by managing tutors/specialists, scheduling tutorial appointments, providing administrative oversight, setting and achieving goals, maintaining accurate records, and acting as a liaison between all tutors/specialists, ITC, SAS, and students, faculty, and staff. The Assistant Director supports student escalations and challenges as needed. The Assistant Director provides analysis, as needed, of student skills and supplemental academic services that can support needs. The Assistant Director manages the ITC space, supports monitoring and evaluation processes, and maintains a neat and orderly environment. The Assistant Director prepares and revises materials, such as program guides, handouts, and online communications including email, the ITC website, and supplemental writing materials. Additionally, the Assistant Director actively reaches out to and collaborates closely with instructors, other departments, and colleges to ensure a coordinated approach to student success. The Assistant Director participates in the development, planning, and implementation of various supplemental academic supports, resources, writing support and ITC programming. Additionally, the Assistant Director participates in projects such as coordinating workshops and class visit presentations, developing special events, or representing the ITC at student resource events. The Assistant Director takes proactive steps to improve communication to, and between, students, tutors, and staff and takes an active role in enhancing the existing systems and reporting mechanisms to better serve students. The Assistant Director serves as students' advocate and liaison to internal and external constituencies and as an agent for change necessary to promote success for international students, while maintaining the mission of CPS SAS and Northeastern. 80% Leadership and Administrative Activities Hire, supervise, and provide a community of practice for tutors, writing specialists, and associated instructors. Serve as initial point of contact and problem-solver for all tutor and student issues and concerns; verify student accounts upon arrival. Manage physical and virtual ITC spaces, including initiating facilities and supply requests; maintaining a neat and orderly space; upholding a positive, friendly, and welcoming environment for tutors and students; and troubleshooting technical issues. Maintain files and records; document and report all pertinent student information and trends; update computerized information system regarding changes to accounts; review various forms and website pages for accuracy; gather necessary data or statistics and prepare reports as required. Report on student concerns both at macro and individual level; identify issues and trends. Co-plan, organize, and execute student networking opportunities, staff professional development programs; and appreciation events. Actively partner and liaise with faculty, staff, and departments to coordinate and promote activities to ensure international student success. Actively monitor attendance, behavior, and other tutoring related data Facilitate writing support activities including hiring and assigning of writing specialists, monitoring demands, and resources Tutor and writing specialist performance evaluation and related processes 10% Programs Develop and coordinate short-term and long-term projects and programs that help CPS SAS achieve its goals for student success, including organizing and facilitating workshops, seminars, educational or community events and participating in teaching courses aimed at increasing student acclimation to campus and/or academic life and success. 10% Special Projects and other duties Participate in special projects, ad hoc committees, or other duties or assignments as needed by CPS SAS. Other duties as assigned by Director Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and at least two years of experience teaching or tutoring English at the post-secondary level. Master's degree or higher preferred in a related field (i.e., Education, TESOL, Linguistics, English, or Speech Pathology). Demonstrated experience working with international students and second language learners and sensitivity to their distinct needs. Experience leading or coordinating people and activities. Experience teaching or tutoring Previous experience in higher education preferred. Strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal communication (both verbal and written). Computer skills and experience working with databases and student management systems. Ability to learn and effectively utilize the College and University-level computer systems in day-to-day student support. Ability to work well with a variety of personalities and juggle many activities simultaneously, take initiative, complete projects, and work as an integral member of a team. Culturally sensitive and aware of issues pertaining to international students, including language limitations, adjustment issues, academic overload, perceptions of authority figures, and differences in educational systems.
